Our 2000 Honda Odyssey with 170K miles was rear-ended a couple weeks back and insurance estimates that it could cost over $5K to repair…about the resale value of the car. (They’re considering calling it a total loss.)

The dilemma is that the car drives great and shows no signs of slowing down, but other “internal things” may be damaged from the collision.

Even if I get a $5K insurance check, I’m not feeling like I want to come up with another $15K to get a decent used minivan. Should I spend the money to get the Honda fixed or use the cash as a downpayment on another FamilyMobile?

 Thanks!

I wouldn’t put much money into it. You never know when these failure prone transmissions will fail. Can you drive it the way it is?

I’d shop for a used Toyota Sienna once you can’t drive this one anymore. Or get a 2005 or newer Odyssey.

At 170K miles, I’d take the check and move on to another vehicle.

You could repair the van only to discover nasty surprises down the road.

There is no frame, it’s a unibody, and even if they stretch the metal back into shape it will not retain it’s original strength.
