For the amount of time invested in posting about that beast it would seem to be more cost effective to just scrap it, get a second job, and buy a new car.

I cannot believe the old girl is running. Just blows me away. It feels like a miracle. She needs a ton of work but she has endured through terrible neglect. She has passed a severe test. She is 34 years old and starts right up. She still drives like an M-1 Abrams on air, to this day. I have gobs and gobs to learn about the engine, suspension, vacuum, containing/reversing rust, the brakes, etc., but, I have time. Ain’t gonna bother to try to learn transmissions. That’s above my pay-scale. The cracker jack mechanic/engineer guy I’ve mentioned? He’s taken two transmissions from different cars and made one that works. He’s unbelievable. Sort of like “the researcher” guy who comments here occasionally. That guy is a brain, too.
An inch is a cinch. Thrilled she’s running. Reattached the air intake “pipe” or “tube” to the air filter housing! The one that runs to the turbo charger is a little loose. It is missing the “ring” that makes it a snug fit.
do not get new car. the more I think about it, if you like the car then keep the car. I think people think cars are just throw away items sometimes. I am not a gear head. I can not do mechanical stuff. however I do have a mechanic that I like and the willingness to keep up with repairs and maintenance. If you is willing to do that then there is no reason why someone can’t have a twenty year old car or more. I do not see a reason why a older car can not take very long trips and then still be used as the daily car for everything.
With antique plates she will never have to pass inspection. Pay about 130 bucks one time and she’s done for good. Other mechanic now going over her for everything that needs fixing. He doesn’t do work on diesel engines, but he can do everything else necessary to make her safe and sound and perhaps startable with a key. Up to me how much I’d like him to do. Grateful for such flexibility on his part. Still stunned my babe is on the verge of rising like the Phoenix
I am going to use a degreaser on the engine where there’s a build up of oil and dirt and stuff. I am going to clean the engine compartment thoroughly and make it shine and clean and polish the rest of the engine and replace all the hoses and belts. The mechanic will install new tires. I need a new rear windshield. The driver’s seat should be replaced or reupholstered. All the metal trim must be polished, the wheels too. Several strips of the wood in the dash need to be refinished and reattached. May need to make several new pieces or replace all of it; if so, I hope Hickory blends in. All carpeting needs to be removed and cleaned. The floor boards inspected for rust and fixed or replaced. Every bit of metal on the body inspected for rust and fixed or replaced. Replace all glow plugs and injectors, change oil/filter and each fuel filter and get the tank purged. To start!
