To air condition or die?

In 1954 Tom McCahill tested the 1954 Old 98 with all equipment, including A/C with the coolinf unit in the trunk. He said “this rig is more comfortable than Cleopatra’s Nile barge”. That same year I was hitchhiking and got a ride with a scientist with allergies in Pontiac with A/C. He bought the car for medical reasons. It was scorching hot that day, and I promised myself I would have it some day. It took till 1976, however when I bought a Ford Granada coupe with the 351V8 engine and air. It was a gas hog, but comfortable and we enjoyed or road hpolidays from then on.

“You need to quit worrying about the environmental boogie man. I promise, he’s not going to eat you and he’s not under the hood of your car.”

Chuckie’s in the trunk. No fooling. 80

My favorite was when McCahill described a Pontiac wagon as handling “like a hippopotamus on a wet river bank”.

Your parents and grandparents didn’t have AC on all their cars. Were they just tougher than you?
