Last Friday, I had the timing belt changed on my 04 Honda Civic LX. Today, the car died because the camshaft position sensor broke. The repair guy is claiming they’re unrelated, but that doesn’t make sense to me. It seems too coincidental that we had this car for six years without any–any!–engine trouble and now it dies three days after someone works on the engine. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don’t believe in coincidences like that either…but they do happen…I suspect they accidentally damaged it while replacing the timing belt. Problem is proving it.

The cam position sensor does have to be unplugged to replace the timing belt so it probably is related.

It may have been caused by the belt replacement, but the sensor is 6-7 years old and just disturbing it may have caused a failing sensor to die. Since it was running fine when you got it back, I’d suspect this is what happened and the mechanic was not at fault.
