Time to change the timing belt on my Sidekick. The shop says FIVE HOURS for a labor cost, $400 plus $50 for the belt.

 Awful lot of money?

It is, but that’s about right. You usually have to take a lot of junk off to get at the belt.

It’s cheaper than a new engine!

I paid a lot more than that for a timing belt on an Accord.

This is a labor-intensive job. If you want to save money you could do it yourself. Then it would only cost $50. Plus the cost of a service manual, tools, equipment, etc.

It’s much easier to write the check.

It may not be enough money. What about the water pump and tensioners, which should also be part of the job?
