Looks like it is a 3.7 hour job, 4.3 if replacing both cam seals and crank seal…
At $200 per hour
3.7 = $740.00
4.3 = $860.00

How common is it to replace the water pump as part of the job on the Honda V6?

In my little part of the world, in general, I have seen water pumps start leaking within a month (Honda included) of replacing the timing belt only, so most all shops replace the water pump with the timing belt being done at regular interviews…

That is why most timing belt kits include a water pump… I always use the Napa kits… The extra labor is only about 0.3 hours, it is just not worth not replacing the water pump…

On my 2 pathfinders I replaced the water pump every other timing-belt change. It’s kind of preventative maintenance. The pump was behind the timing-belt which meant you’d have to do a timing belt replacement to replace the pump.

I assumed @pokemonyouandme123_193319 was going the DYI route. The prices he quoted in his opening post were from the Honda Dream Shop, an online store.

That is the manufacture’s (Honda) site. That site has a parts catalog with manufacture suggested retail prices, useful for comparing pricing with the local dealer’s prices to see if they inflating the prices.

Fair point.
However, on that site, for the parts that you put into your cart, it offers you the choice of:

- Ship from Honda
- Pick Up At Dealer
- Install At Dealer

Based on his opening post, I figured he would have had the parts shipped to him from Honda.
Maybe I assumed incorrectly.

Rumor has it that in your state, in the affluent area where our friend George lives, the Ford dealer has pushed that labor rate so far north it’s gone past the north pole and is hovering in the mid $300 range.

I don’t doubt it

My friend @George_San_Jose1 lives in Ballerville, so I would expect sky-high labor rates

Even where I’m at, I believe labor rates at dealers are roughly $250/hr

What if there was a way to make timing components durable?

Even timing chains/guides require placement at some point.

And the cost to replace a timing chain is several times more expensive than a belt. Most belts can be replaced by a decent back-yard mechanic. Timing chains are a lot more complicated - especially since you need to deal with OIL. In some engines, you have to drop the oil-pan.

Very true, but on average, timing chains are way more durable and last much longer than timing belts do… Most/all timing belts have maintenance intervals, whereas most timing chains don’t…
Heck, most timing chains out last the automatic transmissions in the vehicles…

There are exceptions to most every rule…

Well I just don’t remember. The one 3800 needed a chain at 360k. The other one needed a timing cover before 500k. Just don’t remember if they replaced the chain or not. I suppose they did. Most people don’t expect to drive 300k before death anyway but good luck find in a 3800 of 90s vintage.

Having once done a DYI timing belt replacement on a Hyundai Tiburon, V6, Interference engine, I’ll never own a vehicle with a timing belt again.

Required jacking up the engine, still no room to work and if you don’t get it right you’re looking at expensive engine damage. And after all the work to simply get to the belt, never wanting to do it again, figured that I may as well replace everything, belt pullies, tensioners, water pump, seals and be good for the next 100K miles.

Bottom line is that if you’re going to pay all that money for the labor to do a belt replacement you may as well have everything else done while they’re in there.

Yeah, let’s go back to a smaller outlay of cash **every** year. Points, plugs, coolant, brake adjustment, lube-oil-filter every 1000-3000 miles, valve adjustment with solid lifters, exhaust system every few years, and 10 MPG on “high test” gasoline.

I did experience a timing belt failure. 1970 something Pinto. Unknown miles, after purchase notice odometer did not move, was at 98000+ miles. Belt snapped just as I pulled out of my drive. Non-interference engine, took about 15 minutes to change, line up the timing marks, install belt, start car. I did not change the tensioner.

I was concerned about the timing chains on my 06 Cologne V6, which, to my understanding, had three timing chains.

+1

Those who yearn for _The Good Old Days_ seem to forget the very frequent maintenance that was necessary with those cars. And, even if you maintained your vehicle better than the manufacturer recommended, it was still likely that you would need a new muffler (and possibly much of the exhaust system) every 5 years or so.

My '71 Charger had the smallest (318 c.i.) engine, but it couldn’t muster more than 16 mpg on a long highway trip, and 12 mpg was typical around town. Its acceleration was… adequate… but a modern econo box could beat it nowadays. And, let’s not forget about the lousy brakes that were typical, back in the days of drum brakes. If I had to do a panic stop from high speed with my Charger, brake fade set in by the time that I got it down to ~30 mph.

Enough arguing over timing chains or belts. Let’s just use both! 😀
