2019 Honda Odyssey

This seems outrages to me, even for Honda parts, and significantly more than what I see posted online for just parts only

I got MSRPs from the Honda Dream Shop. You can maybe forgo the serpentine belt and serpentine belt tensioner, but I would opt in to replace them when you do this job. Not sure how much coolant you would need, so I just assumed 2 gallons

Am I missing something here? Why is it so expensive? Can someone please take a look at the parts list I have gathered up and let me know what I’m doing wrong?

Water Pump, PN = 19200-RDV-J01, MSRP = $269.83 (comes with Gasket)

Timing Belt, PN = 14400-R9P-A01, MSRP = $182.42

Timing Belt Adjuster, PN = 14510-R9P-A01, MSRP = $326.20

Timing Belt Tensioner, PN = 14520-RCA-A01, MSRP = $309.10

Timing Belt Idler, PN = 14550-RCA-A01, MSRP = $101.53

Motor Mount Weight Bolt, MSRP = 90165-SDA-A00, MSRP = $2.87

Motor Mount Bracket Bolts (Need 2), PN = 90168-TA1-A00, MSRP = $3.33, Total = $6.66

Timing Belt Idler Bolt, PN = 14551-RCA-A01, MSRP = $12.67

Motor Mount Bracket Bolts (to engine) (Need 2), PN = 95801-10105-08, MSRP = $5.82, Total = $11.64

Motor Mount Bracket Bolt (to engine), PN = 90002-R70-A00, MSRP = $4.15

Serpentine Belt, PN = 31110-RLV-A02, MSRP = $70.25

Serpentine Belt Tensioner, PN = 31170-RLV-A02, MSRP = $128.13

Honda Type 2 Coolant - 1 Gallon (Likely Need a little more than 1), PN = 08CLA-P99-0F0A8, MSRP = $25 (cannot find an MSRP, most places seem to be ~ $50 a bottle)

Total = $1,475.45 + tax???

Honda doesn’t make the parts that require replacing. They sell them at higher prices with the Honda name on the box.

You can get a timing kit for your vehicle for much less.

And if you want to replace other components, you can also get them for much less.

Depends on where you buy from.

</div>

Did you read the part where he says “without labor”, meaning that the cost of nearly $1500 DOES NOT INCLUDE the installation??? I would say that price is utterly insane, meaning one would have to be high as a kite to pay that. The parts alone should cost about $500 with shop markup, and the labor should cost about $1000. So a total “out-the-door” price of about $1500 for a timing belt job would be reasonable.

I really liked using RockAuto, but sadly they no longer sell or ship to my state (Arizona). Unfortunately, the state is attempting to collect sales tax on purchases made BEFORE the Supreme Court ruled that online retailers had to collect each state’s sales tax, based on the absurd legal theory that because RockAuto provided its drop-shippers with RockAuto boxes and refrigerator magnets, therefore the company had a “physical presence” in the state which required collecting sales tax under the old legal precedent.

They have been collecting Minnesota sales tax for years as have the other on line outfits. Not sure what the issue is.

I did not notice it didn’t include labor.

Since I have been considering used minivans from Honda and Toyota, I found that the going rate for a timing belt on the Honda was $1500 in my area. No such expense with the Toyota as it has a timing chain.

Oddly enough the 80 to 100K mile Odyssey is not $1500 cheaper than the Toyota.

Of course not, because the person who is selling their used vehicle isn’t going to do this kind of maintenance before selling. Sellers will fix stuff that’s visible, such as worn-out tires, but they aren’t going to pay for a timing belt job on a vehicle that they’re planning to sell. They will bet that a prospective buyer won’t be sophisticated enough to ask about it. When I have called about used cars for sale on Craigslist, and asked point-blank if they have proof of a recent timing belt change, the response I got was “take it or leave it”, and I left it (the price was too high for a non-maintained vehicle).

We had this job done on (2) Honda Odysseys. Admittedly it was within the past 10 years or so…but both times I recall the total job, parts and labor, was around $700 out the door. Once was at a local independent mechanic.

I’d shop around for a 2nd quote, myself.

I paid $700 for the timing belt and water pump at the dealer on my 2005 Accord in 2012. The updated price of $1500 seems reasonable, depending where you live. I told Mrs JT that we would need a new timing belt and water pump on our 2019 Odyssey when we bought it. She was OK with it then. She will have lots of complaints about that when I reminder the belt is due this fall.

The issue is collecting sale tax from sales made **before** online stores were required to collect. My guess Arizona is having Rockauto and other online suppliers pay the sales tax with the option of the supplier going to the customer. What would you think about getting billed for sales tax on something you bought 25 years ago? The requirement to charge&collect sales tax did not go into effect until **June 21, 2018.**

I have never heard of dealers charging less than MSRP for parts when a car comes in for service. Sometimes dealers sell parts online for less than MSRP though.

What’s going on here, MSRP for parts is much higher than the going rate for the job which also includes labor.

Maybe Honda dealers are not actually using Honda parts lol? Wouldn’t be the first time. But it’s kind of the whole point of going to the dealer.

I did that in 2012 and found that the dealer had the lowest price by almost 10% and had the job done in less than one day.

You have a thousand dollars in precautionary parts on that list. I don’t think you will find anyone who has replaced all of those parts during timing belt maintenance to compare total cost with.

While working at a Lexus dealer, I replaced more than 100 timing belts and only replaced a tensioner or tensioner pulley upon request, they just never fail. There are 15 technicians in the shop and during a typical 90K service only the timing belt is replaced, and the water pump if leaking or if more than 8 to 10 years old.

Aftermarket shops usually replace all moving parts. From the posts on this forum, failures that occur after timing belt replacement are caused by technician error, not worn parts.

@pokemonyouandme123_193319:

Instead of buying your parts at Honda Dream Shop, have you considered other places?

For example, looking at [www.hondazoneparts.com](http://www.hondazoneparts.com), I see they sell the same part number water pump for $192.66 instead of your price of 269.83.

@pokemonyouandme123_193319

Take a look at [www.hondapartsnow.com](http://www.hondapartsnow.com)
They’re even less expensive than [hondazoneparts.com](http://hondazoneparts.com) that I mentioned above.

That water pump (you listed at $269.66) sells for $184.57.
The timing belt adjuster (you listed at $326.20) sells for $228.99.

And similar 30% or more savings off of the prices you mention in your opening post.

</div>

If he is planning to DIY, there’d be no need to pay anything close to these prices. A full timing belt kit from a quality brand such as Gates, Dayco, or Aisin could be purchased online for about $300. In fact, NAPA offers a full kit, made by Aisin—with the tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, gasket, and two O-rings—for $340.99 plus tax. Paying nearly $1300 for this is just insane.

And of course, if he’s planning to have a professional mechanic do this, they will be able to get these same parts cheaper (though obviously they will mark them up to cover their required profit). The entire job, parts AND labor should cost between $1200 and $1500, and that’s for replacing the entire timing belt kit, not just the belt itself.
