When driving my 1996 Honda Accord, 2.7 liter, v.6 in town or on the highway, the tachometer will bounce all over the place and the engine will surge as if it is not getting enough fuel and then getting too much. Is this a fuel filter issue? Not sure what to do. Thanks for any help you can provide.

It’s only one of many possibilities.
When was the last time it had a good tuneup (plugs, wires, rotor and cap, filters)?

Also, you may have trouble codes stored in the car’s ECU. Stop by Autozone, have the ECU read for codes, and post them here.

No, it’s an rpm problem. The distributor generates the rpm signal. The erratic rpm signal could be anywhere from the distributor, through the wires, or, in the rpm gauge. Do you have a mechanic/electrician lined up to repair it?

It is also possible that your transmission is not shifting properly and/or is getting bad information. Are these bounces and surges connected at all to shifts of the transmission? If it downshifts you’ll get an rpm surge and a feel of more torque. Its the opposite when it upshifts.
