Shocks vary in their compression and rebound resistance. Big 4 door Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns often had ZERO compression/100% rebound shocks to soften the ride and replacements shocks ranged from ZERO/100 to 50/50. If there were any offered with greater resistance on compression I never ran across them and as a rule installed 50/50s on everything which resulted in a firmer ride which everyone seemed to like. Usually the better shocks available were 50/50 and the 100% rebounds were the bargain shocks except from the Ford dealer.
