A 2005 Town and Country Limited needs a new starter. The top bolt is difficult to reach and seemingly very tight. Any suggestions as to what combination of tools to use? The step by step videos don’t mention removing the fan assembly to get more access but I’m thinking about it.

If you have had experience with this task, do you recommend accessing from above or from under the vehicle.

Quality tools, specialized info and tools. What would a shop charge? Some things you let a shop do.

Me? I’d break all the bolt loose with a wrench/ratchet (what ever I have room for) and remove the other bolts then sneak in there with a 1/4" ratchet and a shallow socket, you can pull the starter back when the if needed to keep the bolt head close to the trans… or the rachet wrench used in the video would work also…

Wouldn’t you think $150 (local independent) up to $300+ (dealership)? We had everything except that stubborn, half hidden bolt out and ran out of time. Thanks for the tip on the 1/4" ratchet.

That’s a helpful video with information not in the others I have watched. Thank you.

That would mean the indy shop is only $100 per hour flat rate and the dealer is only $150 per hour flat rate, that is pretty low numbers, even in my area… Plus parts…
I know that a chain shop close to me is $178 per hour…

Buy a 15 mm swivel socket and use a 6" extension.
This is a common repair, the old V8s require a 5/8" or 11/16" swivel socket.

Thanks. It is just too restrictive in there for a rigid, straight socket and ratchet..
