My mechanic put new brakes on my '97 Volvo 960 last year. They continue to squeak despite 2 attempts to “clean” them. He installed new front brakes last week at no cost, but they squeak louder than the old ones. Is there a remedy?

When the new brake pads were installed, was the vehicle operated in the manner the brake pad manufacturer recommends to seat the new brake pads?

Perhaps he didn’t apply any lubricant to the back of the pads. There’s always a packet included with new pads. The lubricant prevents squeaking.

That lubricant goes on the side of the pad that contacts with the brake caliper, not on the side of the friction surfaces which contact the rotor. Yes, I’ve seen this on a do-it-your-selfer’s car.
