Anytime an automatic slips, it is destroying itself! Suggest you stop driving it except to slowly get it to a reputable transmission shop. Avoid chains like AAMCO, etc, as others will suggest. Your transmission may be repairable, or it may already be toast.

Good luck!

It has approximately 97000 miles on it. have had it to 2 shop, one was aamco. they hooked up their computers but of course they couldn’t find anything and it would not act up when they test drove it. the one shop did change the fluid and filter, but it still slips. I was looking for maybe a more specific idea of what’s wrong… torgue convert? lock out clutch?

A good independent transmission shop will be able to identify that problem very quickly. Aamco guys are basically trained to replace transmissions. It’s very difficult for us here to pinpoint what ares are the problem. Perhaps Transman can give some possible causes.

Yup! No matter how trivial the problem might be, the guys at AAMCO (and Lee Myles, Cottman, and Mr. Transmission) will likely tell you that you need a new/rebuilt transmission.

And, to add to everyone’s misery and needless expense, I have noticed recently that AAMCO is now advertising themselves as the place to go when you have a problem with your car’s A/C!
