Good point. The path from carburation to modern EFI is more convoluted than I indicated, and includes things like vacuum-operated fuel injection (long ago) and idle stop solenoids. I left out a lot for the sake of brevity.
I was happy to see the feedback carburetors fall off the edge, @circuitsmith. The only one that I could profitably deal with was the Q-Jet. I recall the first time I dealt with a full rich Q-Jet and found that the owner had removed the CEL bulb causing the ECM to pull the power valves fully out and hold them. Needless to say he caused some $erious damage to the engine and the catalyst. The early 80s were the ‘Dark Ages’ of automotive technology. If someone wants all the special tools to repair and adjust a feedback O-Jet I’ll be glad to pay the postage and get them out of my tool box.
