Should I attempt to replace my a/c compessor myself?

I took your advice, Matt, and checked the belts more closely. I was poking around in there when my dad came by, looked at them too, and said “Well no wonder - your belt is missing a tooth!” And sure enough there was a tooth missing from it I never noticed. Upon removing all 3 belts, I was astounded to see a very old-looking worn-out cracked belt with 2 teeth missing that had been driving my a/c compressor. It took me most of the afternoon, but I replaced all 3 belts and haven’t heard a squeak since :-). Thanks so much for your helpful advice!

Knew it! =)

Don’t always be too quick to accept the diagnosis of some shop. Learn to identify things on your own.

As you’ve seen here, it can save you a boatload.

Glad to hear your story. You’re welcome. And, that’s what we’re all here for. =)
