Because they went to MIT and write a car column, I often see in posts the assumption that they’re engineers.
I know the situation. In heavy traffic, merge at the end of the lane. It’s not really merging but… If there are four cars with no traffic in 1500 ft, just don’t crash and everybody is happy.
