When it wasn’t common for cars to have AC the cars had almost upright windshields, cowl vents, side vents,wing windows and sometimes exterior sun visors (sorry ,I know they were not called that but I’m having a senior moment and can’t remember the term ) In other words cars had ventilation. You should try driving a van chassis school bus now that there is no ventilation and the school districts won’t buy them with air cond.

It sound like you are wasting money trying to air condition the car when the top is down. The compressor will run continuously because the cooled air is blowing out of the car immediately. It might feel good blowing on your face however. It will not ruin the AC.
