I recently had a lot of work done to my 2003 Cadillac DeVille and under the hood is almost like new. The last work I had done was a head gasket job. Afterwards, I couldn’t get my computer codes erased and my retired mechanic neighbor, who did the work, couldn’t and/or didn’t have the equipment. The “ABS-Brakes-Traction Control” lights are on as well as the “Check Engine Soon” light underneath those. Also, on my information screen I have such messages as “check gas cap,” “check brake fluid,” “check coolant level.”

My car has the PCM (powertrain control module) located under the air filter. I’ve tried a few things to remove the codes that I’ve read online, but nothing has worked. I haven’t messed with the PCM yet.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how I might be able to clear out the computer on my Cadillac?

I don’t mean to disparage your neighbor/retired mechanic . . .

But have you considered that the codes are legitimate . . . in other words, have you considered the possibility that all these various codes are present because the guy made some kind of mistake(s) during the course of the repair(s)

Can you please elaborate?

Did you use a scanner and/or code reader?

Also . . . do you even know which specific codes you have?

Or do you merely know which warning lights are on and haven’t been able to go further than that?

Thank you for your email.

My neighbor was a working mechanic in Los Angeles for 30 something years in a shop he owned with his brother. My car is running excellent since the recent mechanical work. I did have Autozone use their little scanning tool and various codes came back: P0741, P0440, P1860.
