Should I have the timing chain in my '97 Taurus changed? It has a 3L Duratec V6 engine with 110,000 miles and no apparent engine problems.

No.

A timing chain should last the life of the engine. Should it begin to wear out it’ll start making a racket. Except in very rare instances they don’t suddenly fail without warning like a belt does.

You don’t need to replace a timing chain as a maintenance item. Unlike timing belts timing chains usually last the life of the car. With few exceptions those that don’t last to the end, give you plenty of warning by getting more and more noisy.
