In my area, the automobile dealers try very hard to compete with these quick oil change establishments, both in price and in time to do the job. Two days ago, I had my oil changed on my Chevrolet Uplander. The cost was $23.01 (I don’t understand the extra penny) and the job was done in less than half an hour. I did call ahead for an appointment time. As soon as the warranty is up, I’ll go to my independent garage (yes, I know that oil changes don’t have to be done by the dealer, but the dealer’s charge is less than my independent shop). The advantage of my independent garage is that they do look over things and advise me on what service may be needed in the future. I really don’t see much advantage in these quick oil change stores. It is worth it to me to go to a place I trust even though the charge may be a few dollars more. The real advantage of the quick oil change shops is that they have kept other places competitive in terms of price.
Moreover . . . it is so easy to do . . cheaper than a Jiffy Lube . . and can be done in a half hour or so, and I consider it “fun” when I play carguy again. Why not do it yourself? It’s been 25 years since I did this type of work for a living, but I still do as much of my own as I can, even though I can afford to pay someone else to do it. Guess the bug bites some guys hard when they’re young and we never get over it. Rocketman
