At work, we have several fleet vehicles which consume a lot of engine oil and have some seepage, but no drops hitting the ground
They do NOT smoke
And the ones that get the old school tailpipe smog inspections almost always pass
And when they do fail, it’s usually because of some ignition misfires or something similar
Now if your buddy’s $100 Oldsmobile was belching blue smoke and still “passed” the state emissions inspection, then it sounds like it should have failed
Yes, that IS what it was doing! It also leaked like the Exxon Valdez. All my gear-head friends were convinced the car would not pass. And yet it did. That’s when we knew. The testing was dropped about 9 months later.
The caliber of the emission testing employees seemed far inferior to your knowledge! Not disparaging everyone who does this task, just the ones hired by the contractor who did the testing for Montgomery County Ohio.
I watched one of those same employees place the front wheels of a Ford Aerostar minivan on the rollers. I told the owner standing next to me that his van was not FWD and was going to jump the rollers. He told me it WAS FWD. I was headed out to the shop to tell the employee to stop the test when it DID jump the rollers and almost smacked the car ahead. The VIN would have told them the configuration. No one bothered to look, just took the word of a ignorant owner. Fortunately no one was hurt.
Now I know why you did not see the school bus; your windows were tinted and you are what, Bragging that you tint your windows in violation of the New York State Law on Window Tinting? And since you fail the state inspections each year due to your tinted windows, you do what? Pay to have the old tinting removed and then reapplied after the state inspection…

So, when you are ticketed for the illegal tint on your windows, please do not post about the unfairness of the Tint Law in NY. Rather submit the form (link below…) and re-request a new… You need to “up your game” and you should explain that the bright flashing lights on a Stopped School Bus or the flashing Railroad Crossing Lights blind you and that is why your roll thought these Required Stops…
The only thing that is unfair is that the other drivers have to share the road with a “deaf” and now admittedly a “blind” driver who cannot see a Stopped School Bus or Railroad Crossing Signs…

Back in 1938, people were assigned a block or floor to spy on their neighbors and report them for bad conduct. So I’m a little against inspection stations. I know it’s extreme, but I don’t think people drive on bald tires because they want to. But go ahead and take a flashlight and check your neighbors tires if you want. I get new ones at about 5/32 though myself. It’s really not about tires though.
I doubt this is state related as much as it seems. Politicians in most states I expect are on the look-out for something to tax & regulate. Better if is something that people need, but don’t have a constitutionally guaranteed right to own or use. Cars & trucks fit the bill nicely.
It took me some time of participation to identify the reliable contributors on this platform. And the reliable ones, even though some times might get the answer incorrect, their demeanor are positive and supportive, making it difficult to refute their information.
I tried 70% before. It wasn’t helpful at all. This is why my doctors tried to get me darker tints but DMV disapproved because I didn’t have any of the medical issues that were qualifying for tint exception. They rejected my doctor’s explanation.
Since DMV feels like they know best, when they don’t, I fixed my problem myself.
NY has some of the toughest laws nationwide and yet tNY is a poop house.
EDIT. If you go on YouTube to compare 70% tint to natural non-tint windows, you’ll realize they are almost identical. This is why people don’t go with 70% tint.
Now, if I go 20% darker than allowed, which would be 50%, I would get a slight shade ( not dark ) and it’ll help with the sun.
I’ve gotten pulled over by state troopers for speeding and when I asked the cop if they thought my tint were too dark, they all said no. But I don’t think they realize I have 50% tint on there.
Just one cop gave me a warning to remove the tint some 12 years ago. This was in Manhattan and by a Chinese cop.
Nevada allows 35% window tint on the front side windows and a “Glare strip” on the top 6" of the windshield.
I have road tested many customer vehicles after repairs, the vehicles with tint darker than legal tint are difficult to see out of while driving at night. Headlights can be seen but pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles without headlights are very difficult to see. I usually lower the front windows when approaching an intersection for right turns so I can see pedestrians and bicycles on the sidewalk.
Dark tint can be a hazard at night, in addition, I find the side view mirrors difficult to see with dark tint.
