POINTLESS thread: My local shade tree mechanic (and neighbor) is a nice guy but I wouldn't trust

A friendly reminder that ethylene glycol antifreeze is readily biodegradable in sewer sludge. If this antifreeze in pure form were dumped into a sewerage disposal drain or even on porous ground, it would be of little concern. They are lots of biodegradable substances that are poisonous to mammals but present no problems to mammals once they are allowed, in short order, to degrade. Even consumer Reports once acknowledge dumping antifreeze on the ground was proper. The problem was then, the other elements including lead from lead solder that were also present back then from cooling systems, could eventually contaminate the ground water. Drinking surface water is not recommended for similar reasons as is not drinking lots of liquids that have not had a chance to degrade. But, if it s a storm drain and can quickly find it’s way into an open settling or surface pond, you have a problem…a potentially big one.

@Bing is right. The guy might actually be better off, digging a hole in the ground and just dumping it (antifreeze) there. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for the rest of us, there are waste disposal areas that sort out this mess fr us…take advantage of them. By in large though, antifreeze is among the easiest to treat ( just combine it with sewer sludge) and is no where near on the same level as waste oil, not even close…just let it be done right by someone in the right environment and equipped to do it and separate out contaminants to be handled in different ways.

Even in my backwoods part of Indiana, our county has a tox away day once a year, They will take toxic materials for free.

I agree that the coolant isn’t the worst thing to dump, but it needs to stop. I hope he is not dumping oil also…

The most passive way I could think of is tell him your car or a friends car is a real beater and eats antifreeze, ask him to save you his waste antifreeze for later use, then take it and dispose of it properly.

Its either that or make a friendly suggestion, or just have A come to Jesus talk with him and tell him it stops now or you will contact your states environmental protection agency.

Some ignorant people around here still dump their waste oil on the ground because " it came from the ground". These are the same people who are are referred to by their friends by their name and not where they work but what bar they drink at. " That’s Jim Smith, he drinks over at the silver nickle tavern, Hes a good 'ol boy"

Its also important know what brand cigs they smoke, if they like long cut or fine cut chew, and what their beer of choice is.

I was on vacation once in southern illinois, I was in a small town taking pictures of the Missisippi River at a boat launch. Three boneheads pull up in an old late 70’s dodge pickup and get out and start dumping what looked like used motor oil in the river. I was so upset and angry I almost confronted them, but they were drunk and were all beastly bulging men and I knew they could kick my butt.

As they were leaving they drove right by my truck even though they had to go out of their way and stared me down and almost stopped, Luckily back then I was driving my pickup truck so I kinda fit in, If I had my prius back then they would have beat me, anywho, I flagged them down right as they passed me and told them I was going to visit my cousin in the nearby prison and I wasn’t from around there, I asked where I could get some cold beer. This seemed to change their whole demeanor and they still acted suspicious but were friendlier. They asked where I was from and why I was taking pictures, I told them I was from Indiana and my dad was an old barge captain and I was trying to get my paw a barge picture. They offered me a Budweiser from their cooler of beer in the cab which I took because It seemed like they were not giving me a choice, and I popped the top and took a swig. I told them I had to get to the prison and had to get going. I followed them out of the boat ramp area and everyone had a beer in their hand while driving including me. I don’t drink, and hate drinking and driving, so I dumped the can of beer and threw the can away once I got out of that town.

I felt like something really bad could have happened from that encounter and it still spooks me to this day. I believe those guys wanted to start trouble, I think I diffused the situation by making them think we had common ground. They were very drunk, and very irrational, and I was by myself and at the time I didn’t have a cell phone.

We are all Doomed.

Yes, the green stuff is biodegrade able. I have allowed it to dry on my concrete apron before on rare occasion. But not unattended. The bigger issue are the dissolved metals picked up in the cooling system. Anybody routinely dumping it is sending those pollutants into the environment at concerning levels. It’s irresponsible behavior in today’s world.

@TwinTurbo‌
Absolutely. We live on a lake and improper dumping on a large scale can scare the heck out of lake users and shore front owners. One of the excellent things done over the years is the removal of metals like lead from areas that could contribute to pollution, both in gasoline and solder in the cooling system. Most people weren’t bad when many did such things, they just didn’t know. Erring on the side of caution when you don’t know is always best but providing people with alternatives and education is necessary too.

I would rather find some way of letting him gently know that there would be serious consequences if he were caught. Not in a threatening way, but with concern that you worry that someone will turn him in. That’s when you offer to see if you have some old containers you could put it in. You could even offer to call you find out how you’re supposed to dispose of it. You just have to keep the right level of neighborly concern. Then, if that doesn’t work, report him… Maybe not immediately, so he won’t be caught red-handed.

It won’t hurt to politely bring the subject up about proper disposal of old fluids and so on but there are several potential snags with that.

  1. If the gets in hot water over what he’s being doing he will more than likely point the finger at the person who politely mentioned not doing it anymore even if that person is not the one who ratted him out.

  2. Seeing as how he appears to be a major league hack, his behavior may be so engrained that it’s not going to ever change; short of being hammered by the law.

One also has to wonder what he’s been doing with engine oil, trans fluid, etc… :frowning:

@OK,burning shingles and plastic with it?(just kidding) but some Folks dont seem to mind-Kevin

I was under the impression that sewage disposal systems are capable of handling modest quantities of ethylene glycol…as opposed to motor oil, which gets back into the river regardless.

(Granted, shadetree is dumping in the storm sewer, and we cannot presume shared storm and sanitary sewers…they’ve been phasing those out here locally; had to disconnect the gutters from the sewers when i bought my house last year.)
