We have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When we hit a pothole or large bump in the road and are going 55+ mph the vehicle will begin shaking like crazy and we can barely control the steering wheel. The only thing we can do is hold on and try to get it to the shoulder of the road where we stop and catch our breath and count our passengers. Once we start up again it drives smooth as you please, until you might encounter another elephant trap pothole. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is happening?

Have the steering stabilizer inspected. It’s not a major repair at all.

I’ve seen shops do a whole front end rebuild on JGCs with this probelm. Don’t fall for that ruse. ok4450 is right. The steering damper looks just like a shock absorber laying on its side (because it is) connected to the steering system. You can change it yourself in fifteen minutes. I replaced it on my daughter’s JGC about 70K miles ago. It’s still fine at 173K.
