So I’m walking back from class on the campus of the greatest University in the South, the University of Alabama of course. All of the sudden a torrential downpour strikes. By the time I can fish out my umbrella my whole body is soaked including my backpack. It just so happens that my keys were in this backpack. Anyway, I get back to my car and the remote key fob is soaked, pretty much sitting in a pool of water in my backpack. Needless to say the thing won’t work now. What’s my best option here, can I replace the battery or should I scrounge up the $100+ for a new one?

Separate the two halves and dry it out.

Moisture between the contacts is the problem.

I don’t think you need a new battery, unless the old one was running down.

If you replace the battery, and you do NOT have another remote already programmed, you will have to have the remote reprogrammed by a dealer.

Yes, I’m afraid so.

But, like I mentioned, you need to have one programmed in order to program or re-program a second or third one yourself.

Removing the battery breaks the circuit and because these remotes are programmed by radio frequencies (which constantly change to keep the security system active) the dealer has to do it.

Follow these steps to re-program:

Most Nissan Vehicles

The horn chirp can be disable by pressing the lock and unlock buttons simultaneously until the hazard lights flash, and no enable press the lock and unlock until the horn chirp.

To reprogram (enter new ID) key fob (keyless remote controller) follow the steps.

1. Close all doors and lock all doors

2. Insert and remove the key from the ignition key cylinder more than six times within 10 seconds.
(The hazard warning lamp will then flash.)
NOTE:
Key should be withdrawn from ignition key cylinder completely each time.

3. Insert key on ignition key cylinder and turn ignition key switch to “AAC” position
At this time, the new ID code is entered and original (previous) ID codes are erase.

4. Press any button on the new remote controller once. (The hazard warning lamp will then flash)

5. Remove key from ignition

6. Unlock driver side door, open driver side door and then close the door. (END)

UPDATE!!!
I took the remote into the dealership and they told me that it has short circuitted and that I need to purchase a new one. Rather than pay 120 bucks I decided to buy one on ebay. So the used remote came in the mail today. I tried the above mentioned procedure to program it however the lock button seems to be stuck and it won’t accept the id code. I tried the original remote and it worked fine for a few hours until my car alarm started screaming like a banshee. What to do, what to do?
