My husband is 6’4" and we are looking for a vehicle that can fit a car seat (not to mention leg room for the little ones)behind the drivers seat when the drivers seat is all the way back. Daddy needs a lot of leg room. We have a 2006 1500 Dodge Ram and 2004 Mountaineer (which he rarely drives) and would trade one or both in for vehicles that are roomy and not gas guzzlers. Any suggestions?

A 6’3" friend has a 2004 Crown Victoria and loves it. Otherwise, check out minivans (lots of head room). My Dad has a 2005 Ford 500 and it also has plenty of headroom.

Some minivans have very roomy interior and a a wide rang of seating arrangements and adjustments. For $20,000 you can buy a Dodge Grand Caravan with 3 rows of seats, and you don’t even need to use the seat behind the driver.

The cabs on many pickups are not very accommodating.

The ideal car for you would be a London Taxi (sells for about $45,000), wich has so much rear legroom that it can accommodate 2 additional jump seats in the back as well.

In other words, you really own the wrong vehicles.

Your husband needs to try a vehicle on for size just as he would try on a pair of shoes. What is comfortable for one person may be uncomfortable for another. I am over 6’ 2" tall and have long legs. I have had 4 minivans, a 1990 Ford Aerostar, a 2000 Ford Windstar, a 2006 Chevrolet Uplander and presently own a 2011 Toyota Sienna. I have been comfortable in all these vehicles. I am comfortable in the 2003 Toyota 4Runner that we also own. On the other hand, we had a loaded 1993 Oldsmobile 88 and even with the power seats, I was never comfortable driving it and my legs would cramp after 100 miles. I have driven vehicles from my university’s fleet. The Ford Taurus I found comfortable, but I didn’t have enough leg room in the Honda Civic Hybrid. However, I was assigned to a Nissan Sentra and found it quite comfortable. The last vehicle I was assigned was a Ford Escape Hybrid and it was very comfortable. I had trips of at least 150 miles each way in these cars. The Ford Escape Hybrid gave just over 31 mpg on the road. The Honda Civic Hybrid road mpg was just over 41 mpg. I have no idea what mileage we got on the Nissan Sentra.

Thanks - this is helpful information. We are not really looking for a minivan, but I will definitely have him try out a variety of options!

In CR the CRV was recommended for consideration for both tall and short drivers. The compact SUVs in general are worth trying out in 4cyl in all or two wheel drive they are excellent people haulers.

I’m 6’3 with a 35" inseam and when I put the seat in my wifes Lexus ES350 all the way…there’s plenty of legroom in the rear seats. The Accord is a little tight. My 05 4runner has plenty of legroom also. My coworkers 08 Volvo…the rear seats are useless…I can’t even get my feet in the back seat let along my legs and the rest of me.

Newer Nissan Altimas can do that easy.
Hyundai Sonatas, too.

Having long legs is a problem in driving some cars. I would really like to have a Mazda Miata, but my legs are too long. I thought about having my legs surgically shortened, but Medicare won’t pick up the tab–thinks it isn’t important surgery. Medicare won’t buy my argument that my well-being depends on me being able to drive a Miata.

They’ve probable had too many claims for ‘Miata knee’ from folks like us…guys tend to wrench them getting out of too-low seats…

I think ‘Miata knee’ came along long before Mazda brought out the MX-5 (Miata). I found the seats too low for comfort in the 1957 Plymouth and I was only a teen-ager at the time.
