The manufacturer’s ratings are from testing of ride quality, traction, handling, and fuel economy. Probably especially fuel economy these days, but in 2004 on your ‘sporty’ vehicle it was likely more about the handling.
I would just follow the manufacturers recommendation on the door plate. If you’re worried about inflating to max pressure, drop the pressure a couple of pounds. Your mileage will probably suffer a little but likely nothing else. It may end up riding slightly better.
