Nissan’s terms were not acceptable to Honda. To me that means Nissan really didn’t want to merge under a reasonable settlement.
Rising car prices and high interest rates are really hurting lower-income buyers. When budgets are already tight, missing a payment feels almost inevitable.
I think I got $80 as an E1 when my $60 school payments started. That’s pretty tight but never missed or was late. Of course I got free room and board and cigs were $3 a carton at the PX.
Sure, back then $80 was peanuts even including room and board BUT more important in the military you had a guaranteed income which made bank lending and repayment possible.
Contrast that with the then prevailing “Easter Parade” when new college graduates were hired in bulk for Busy Season (at a much higher salary) but then terminated in bulk in the Spring. So what happens to the the young pup who relocated to a rental apartment and bought a car to take the job when they suddenly find themselves unemployed?
I find it extremely hard to believe that they didn’t know it was only a seasonal job. NH hires a lot of seasonal employees for both summer seasonal jobs and winter. Over the years I’ve met quite a few of ski patrol workers. I’m pretty sure they knew their job was over when the snow melted.
Do you (ummm, did you) get many seasonal immigrants there? My nephew worked at a ski resort in Western Virginia and they had a lot of seasonal workers from South America.
They get quite a few from Europe. But I think the majority are from the US.
Businesses at NJ shore towns (restaurants and motels, mostly) used to rely heavily on young folks from Europe to fill many of their jobs. Now, they are getting very few applicants from Europe, but perhaps that doesn’t matter very much at this point, because Canadians have recently reduced their travel to NJ shore towns during the summer.
Yeah I was talking to someone the other day about the canadians being mad at us now so they didn’t want to go south in the winter. Ok be mad but their options are limited. We own a lot of land between the frozen north and warm south. Nothing like shooting yourself in the foot. I remember an un named person got mad at the car rental agent and refused their car to teach them. So she ended up without a car for the week and the rest of us had to cart her around. Guess she showed them. Lots of Canadians own warm weather property so use it or not that’s ok, just pay your property taxes or we’ll take it away.
The Canadians who now choose to not venture South during the summer have caused a drastic drop in income for business owners in upstate NY and the New England states, in addition to NJ.
Easier to get vacation beach rentals now that Canadians aren’t sweeping them up.
Canada used to be a fun place to go too until they went insane during covid. It was interesting when we went to a ball game in Toronto. So quiet you could hear a pin drop. It was refreshing to see them come to life during the World Series though. Just like here, there is an east and a west and a vast expanse in between with different characteristics. Fishing remains good if you can get in.
Yeah, and that “insanity” led to a far lower death rate there, as compared to The US. Canada was the only country other than Japan to see fewer than 1000 covid related deaths per million population .
Canada had 919 covid deaths per million people up to February 2022. The country with the lowest losses was Japan, at 156 per million, while the US had the most, with 2750 deaths per million.
Ski Bums, Summer resort workers, etc. of course but I’m talking about college graduates from top tier colles lured to their first jobs with promises of high pay and continuing employment with major firms only to find that they’re no longer needed after their Project or Busy Season is done.
“Project X is now completed or cancelled and an email is sent saying “So long and good bye”.
My point is that it’s not only exclusive to Unskilled or Low Income workers. The brilliant kid from Indiana who moved to Boston SF or DC might find themself “up the creek” with big cost commitments and no way to pay them without any fault of their own.
Well of course now the numbers are being questioned as to why flu deaths pgretty much disappeared and car accident deaths were recorded as Covid deaths. Some docs now are admitting they were instructed as such, but not to bring this up again and back to drum brakes.
Many years ago our governor, noting how essential summer workers were to the resorts, made sure that schools did not start before Labor Day. Some called him governor goofy but I liked him.
Can you provide a link to a credible website that supports your allegations?
Mexico is an alternative.
Just watch re=runs of the congressional hearings. They had a whole panel of experts.
And you have evidence of that happening? My daughter graduated from a top tier university (MIT) and firms were pounding on the door with great offers. My middle son graduated from a second tier university (RPI) and again received multiple good offers from many companies. Youngest graduated from BC and is now in graduate school working on his PHd.
As a retired Director of Engineering for a small company in the Boston area - what you’re saying is total bull. Companies don’t spend the time hiring and training someone for a short term projects just to let them go when the project is over. They’ll hire consultants that know their job is temporary. It’s extremely rare to hire a fresh-out into a consulting position. Companies what someone with experience for those positions so they spend less time bringing them up to speed.
It varies with the individual company. My brother’s first job after returning from Vietnam was with a consulting company that was contracted to improve functions at Pan American Airlines.
He got good evaluations, but he–along with several other veterans–were terminated right after the Pan Am contract ended. None of them were ever informed that they were being hired just for that one project.
