I was my step-mom’s audio buyer, she had a nice old belt drive turntable and an HH Scott tube integrated amp. You could even pick the record equalization on it, before RIAA was the standard. Looked something like this:

 ![image](https://global.discourse-cdn.com/cartalk/original/3X/a/4/a4f4e1cc5e90ddba8a91b9d13e83ce6bb46e0611.jpeg)

Later, her Altec speakers gave up the ghost (the paper cones fell apart) and I found a nice set of bookshelf speakers that fit in the big Altec boxes (she used them for end tables).

Since this is Cartalk does anyone know how to hang a 65 inch CRT television on a garage wall ?

I was wondering how long it would take for that. I’ve just about given up getting new questions on automobile-related topics, they are so few and far between. So a wander down this lane seemed as good a topic as any.

Will other consumers accept the Movie/ Film Maker mode picture?

Have you thought about just reconning the speakers? Do you know the model numbers? Huge fan of Altec. I’ve owned a couple pairs over the years.

I have a pair of Marantz HD880 floor standing speakers I bought back in the early 80s. Probably some time in the 90s, the cones fell apart and I was going to just toss them out. I ran across a store that was something of a time capsule with a guy that did repairs. He convinced me to keep them- in fact he was keen to buy them. “They don’t make cross-overs like that any more”. So I decided to keep them and he rebuilt them. He also replaced the grill fabric and restored the wood cabinets and charged me almost nothing. He said it was a rescue 🙂

They still work great and I have them in our ADU with the rest of my vintage sound system. I don’t always listen to Metallica but when I do, so do my neighbors 😁

So, in keeping with the automatic theme of CarTalk, a “tow truck with chains” cannot pull you out of your mental CRT rut…

It’s not mental, Thunder, it’s what I see with my own eyes.

Yes, it takes a senior citizen (like me) all of 10 seconds to change modes on an HDTV, but we should be fair and admit that it would take the typical 8 year old kid only 5 seconds to do it.
😏

This guy and his wifey is 100% lost on this subject, we just buy the TV, hook it up, turn it on and watch it, thought they were already adjusted from the factory just being honest…

The only thing I every try to do is equalize the volume, I hate it being so loud when something happens and then you can’t hear what is being said… You can only turn up the volume so loud before you tick off the rest of the family trying to sleep… lol

Just tried to find our picture mode (after skimming through the beginning of MikesInNH’s link) and couldn’t find it, and gave up before we screwed something up…

Currently have a cheap 58" Hisense Roku TV that we are perfectly happy with, the with plays some XBox on it and the picture looks great to us… 🤷‍♂️

What were they - Valencia’s?

I haven’t tried them, but some add on soundbars claim to make speech clearer. I am now in the group where background noise, whether music, audience, gunfire, or engine noise makes speech difficult to understand.

I don’t remember. They looked a lot like this Carmel, but it has dual woofers, hers only had one.

Here’s a pic of the [Velencia’s](https://skyfiaudio.com/products/altec-lansing-valencia-846a-vintage-horn-speakers-a-true-survivor-pair)

I’ve listened to a pair of recently restored Velencia’s. After over 50 years they still sound amazing.

I have mine set to “Clear Voice Pro”. It really makes a difference.
Your set might use different terminology for something similar

Not the Valencia, either. Not that big. They looked just like this, I can’t tell what brand that logo is, maybe they weren’t Altec:

Edit - that’s the JBL logo, must have been JBLs, looks like they were the C38 model.
