Large drop in gas mileage

No change in handling.

Then I have to assume that you don’t do any fast cornering.

So you knew your tires were around 24psi and/or lower…

You may not have noticed any ill handling, but that low on air pressure will overheat the tires and cause premature wear… So always best to keep up with the pressures at least once a month…

Also make sure your maintenance is up to date according to your mileage and miles…

I am trying to think of scenarios where fast cornering would be necessary.

Racing would be one.

What about running from the cops? (Though I guess you could call that racing?)

Sometimes, in order to avoid animals/debris/potholes/obstacles in the roadway, it can be necessary to take sudden evasive action. With seriously deflated tires, your ability to swerve safely is greatly reduced, and taking that type of necessary evasive action can wind-up causing you to lose control.
