… of their upcoming replacement for the Aventador. The new car makes use of a _lot_ of carbon fiber for its chassis, and it is also a hybrid.

How is a carbon fiber chassis safe? In an accident wouldn’t it brake? If for example roll over in the car. Frame on the roof for example would have to be strong enough to support the whole weight of the car. Seems a bit scary to me. Carbon fiber panels sure, but the chassis???

Carbon fiber, done right, is crazy strong. Common in all kinds of race cars, airplanes, etc.

And still very expensive compared to steel.

The first carbon fiber passenger car was the 1995 McLaren F1, million dollar car when new. $20 M now. Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean) wrecked his twice. Repaired both times with no injury to him.

Carbon fiber is very strong.

No, that is the function of the rotors, calipers, and brake pads, just like in other vehicles. The carbon fiber chassis is designed to absorb more of the impact forces, and to deform in the process, rather than **breaking**.

It’s an Aventador. Who cares how much it costs?

Anyway, relative cost is down from a couple decades ago. Back then only the military could afford carbon fiber materials, then NASA joined in once prices fell. Next airframe manufactures started using them. @john.smith0909123_160324, the Boeing 787 is 80% composite by volume, including a composite fuselage. There is effectively a crash every time one lands.

## CARBON FIBER IS STRONG

Indeed, at equal weight carbon fiber can be about [5 times as strong as steel](https://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/fuel-economy/carbon-fiber-oil-crisis1.htm) and two times as stiff. Because of its strength, carbon fiber is incredibly safe when used in automobile manufacturing. In November of 2018, [Volvo and Polestar crash-tested the strength of carbon fiber](http://compositesmanufacturingmagazine.com/2018/11/polestar-evaluates-strength-of-carbon-fibre-in-successful-first-crash-test/) in critical components of its car and were pleased by its performance. In fact, in a 35-mph frontal collision, the carbon fiber components showed no signs of bending or misalignment.

Because many times what’s put in these exotic cars trickles down to everyday cars.
