Jeopardy humor

Jeopardy - one more show to add to the list of shows I have never seen.

@VDCdriver I wish some people would know.things inside their field. I had a Ford Aerostar that was.still under warranty and was running poorly. I knew that.it wasn’t hitting on one cylinder. I droped the.Aerostar off at theFord dealer and got a ride back to my office. A couple hours later, I got a call from the service manager telling me that there was something wrong with my van, but they couldn’t fix it because the computer couldn’t tell them what was wrong. I told the manager to have the technician remove the spark plug wire from each cylinder and replace it. If disconnecting a spark plug wire didn’t make a difference, that would pinpoint the problem. The service manager then replied that.on warranty work they could only fix what the computer indicated what to repair. I said that I would pay for an hour labor if they would follow my suggestion and it didn’t turn up the problem. If my suggestion was followed and it did find the problem, the Aerostar would be repaired on warranty. Forty five minutes after the phone call, the service manager called back and said my vehicle was fixed and and there was no charge. When I picked up the Aerostar, the service manager showed me thecm defective spark plug. The ceramic insulator had broken away around the firing tip. The service manager said I would have no more problem. I said that I thought that the problem would reoccur and I would be back. I was right. When the problem happened again, the technician found a hairline crack in the cylinder head. Enough coolant had leaked into that cylinder thst the engine had to be replaced. Fortunately, the warranty covered the new engine and that In having a little knowledge ourside.my field of mathematics and computer science of auto mechanics saved me some grief of getting my van fixed.

I worked with this guy years ago who was BRILLIANT. Graduated MIT at age 17. Finished his PhD in Physics at Cal-Tec in 3 years. Went back to MIT and finished another PhD in EE in another 3 years. Held numerous patents. Then one day in the cafeteria I saw him struggling with how to operate a newfangled vending machine that now accepted dollar bills. He had different priorities in life then most of us.

Joyce Brothers started her career by winning on a quiz show in the category of boxing, which she just memorized.

They’re still driving their old microbuses.

The new-fangled Jeopardy contestants prepare for whatever they may get. Ken Jennings, a Mormon, boned up on cocktails because ā€˜Potent Potables’ is a common category.

The computer couldn’t detect a miss? Would it have taken you less time to replace the plugs yourself?

My wife is one of those people who won’t deal with that ā€œstress and inconvenienceā€. Accordingly we lease a new car every three years.

Hey Dave, i got my first epidural steroid injection 3 months ago. As the pain doc leaned over me with the the big needle, i said "Doc, if i see any cerebro spinal fluid in that syringe after you withdraw the needle I’m going to grab you by the family jewels, and squeeze until you’re singing in the key of high ā€œCā€ ". While I have you, did the A727 teansmission add part-throttle kickdown in 1962?

62 was the 1st year for the aluminum case A727, but it wasn’t until 66 that had part throttle kickdown added IIRC… It was also a push button trans…

@RandomTroll The Aerostar was under warranty. This was back in 1992. I was quite busy with my teaching and research. I decided it was the Ford dealer’s problem to handle.

Thanks. I had to check out a 63 new yorker today that a friend bought. He wanted me to rebuild the transmission because it wouldnt downshift under part throttle. I’ll be happy to inform him that its working just the way its supposed to.

You are welcome sir…

Even if it was a 66 and up, shouldn’t need a rebuild to get it to down shift… Adjusting the band (outside of case) and kick down linkage should take care of that, most of the time…

if moderator could remove X posts, I don’t know what happened.

Last night’s Jeopardy had another humorous car response. The question said ā€œwhat component is the problem if you turn the key to start a car and all you hear is click/click.ā€ Of course, those who wrote the question had ā€œbad batteryā€ in mind, but the first responder was dinged for answering with another correct answer ā€œthe alternatorā€.

And that’s a valid answer. Sure the battery is dead - but the root cause could be because the Alternator isn’t charging the battery. He probably gave that answer because it happened to him. Mechanic replaced alternator and then charged the battery - problem solved.

Right, don’t need boiling point enhancement in that case. More importantly than corrosion inhibitor is a surfactant. Without that, the water tends to do localized boiling at the hot spots (cylinder walls for example). Steam bubbles do not transfer heat. A surfactant reduces surface tension of the water, prevents localized boiling and keeps the water in contact with the metal being cooled by it…

Water Wetter was a commonly used product at the tracks I frequented.

Most of those guys are running 1/2 block or full block fills… The rad is used for the heads…

Yeah, there’s a time and place for that. I never had anything above 650hp personally and I liked to drive it on the street as well (with a shoe change). Saw quite a few ā€œweekendersā€ trying to be like the big boys and doing more harm than good.

Cylinder walls, heads, no matter. If the metal gets hot with plain water, it looks like that boiling water in the pot on your stove. Lots of localized boiling with steam bubbles…not good. Coolant additives that have corrosion protection will also have surfactant properties…plain water = no good.

There is no ā€œoutside the caseā€ band adjustment on a torqueflight. You had to drop the pan to adjust the bands. And some 66 torqueflight transmissions had some flashing inside the case that prevented it from part throttle kickdown. In fact they would upshift at 10 and 20 mph regardless of throttle position. I had one of these, 66 Dodge Coronet 440 wagon with a 361 2V engine.

Edit: I should have said 727 torqueflight. I never messed with a 904 torqueflight.

Keith, with all do respect, you might want to check your home work a little better sir, A727, A500, A518, A904, A998 & my favorite the A999, at least 1966 and up have the kick down (2nd gear) band adjustment on the left side of the case on the outside, the manual low/reverse drum band adjustment is on the inside the case…
Now I have never messed with the old 1959 and older Iron case Torqueflite, and yes it is spelt Torqueflite not torqueflight… the aluminum case 1960-1965 and 1966-mid1968 had some production changes, but not a lot changed from 1968-1976 until the lock up in 1977, and then again when the A500/A518 OD’s were introduced…

Try again… I have about 6 or 7 of these transmissions sitting in my garage right now…

The kickdown band adjustment is circled in blue…

Sorry Keith, I respect you and all, but I think I am a little more qualified on this subject then your are… I have been building these baby’s for over 30 years now off an on…

Very little difference other than the size, some racers use the guts out of a A904 and put them in the A727 to reduce the rotating mass and pick up faster 1/4 ET’s… At 1st glance if you don’t see the right side of the case where the servo is kicked out, you might mix up the A727 baby (small block bell) and the A904 V8 trans… Heck most guys can’t tell the difference between the big block bell and the small block bell housing, sometimes even when looking at them both…

Hey Dave, that’s a big garage and it’s full. Does your wife park on the street? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
