There is nothing in those lash specs that should cause a loud ticking. Listening to noises over PC speakers is not easy for me due to sound quality and the fact that I have tinnitus and a roughly 50+ % hearing loss in both ears. Blame it on Led Zeppelin records and live performance; both at 11 on the volume control…
Offhand, it sounds like more than one noise but that could be me. Maybe some chain noise and a less noticeable rod bearing rap. Maybe someone with better hearing will chime in on this.
Noise or no noise, there is still the low compression issue and the shaky, low manifold vacuum reading. The vacuum reading should be rock steady at about 20" give or take a bit and more than likely the low vacuum is related to the low compression.
The tinnitus, which varies in intensity, is acting up so I’ll listen to that a bit more when it eases up a bit; or hopefully eases up. It’s not pleasant dealing with muy cicadas in your ears…
I did another test I missed which was a dry/wet compression test. Dry the psi was 90 and wet the psi was 130. After some research it indicates worn piston rings
This is off topic, but ok4450 you are correct, the cicada noise in your ears is really annoying.
Was the engine for the most part warmed up when you got the 90 psi reading?
I’d be suspicious of that reading. Have it measured again, only this time with the engine warm.
I don’t think the engine temperature is going to make much of a difference at all with the compression readings. The jump from 90 to 130 does point to a ring issue. A 130 is not good anyway and 90 is horrible.
After listening (or trying to with my poor hearing and tinnitus) I can’t say for sure on the noise. It does sound like multiple causes to me. I’m wondering if the engine is just flat tired and most of the noise is timing chain clatter due to low oil pressure. Oil pressure is what feeds the chain tensioners and keeps the chains snugged up.
It seems that I hear a rod bearing rap in there also (which could influence oil pressure) but I’m not certain on that.
To be honest, I think that motor is a goner.
@Volvo V70 You’re right about the ringing. The hearing loss and tinnitus is annoying but dealing with people who can’t seem to comprehend hearing loss is just as bad if not worse. If someone speaks clearly and coherently I have no problem carrying on a conversation.
Unfortunately, it seems that many businesses hire people whose main qualification is mumbling.
With some of them I’ve told them 3 times I’m hard of hearing and they have to speak up. Quite often this leads to more of the same and I know it’s not all me. My wife has excellent hearing and she says that she can barely hear them.
Even my mother in law is guilty of this. She knows of the problem and her normal voice is very low. Yet she gets frustrated with me when I don’t catch every word she says. To make things worse she will even lean towards me sometimes from 10 feet away and whisper something followed by getting upset with me because I didn’t hear it. Anywho, I digress…
