# Intrepid runs rough and races

When I start my intrepid it runs rough for like 5 seconds, backfires in the intake manifold, and then the engine just screams. I shut it off as soon as that happens. I’m afraid of blowing the engine.

try checking vacuum lines.

Is the check engine light on? If so, what codes are you getting? You can check the stored codes on this year of Intrepid by turning the ignition on-off-on-off-on fairly rapidly (do not start the car) and counting the blinks of the check engine light. A code 12 for example would be one blink, a short pause, then two blinks. A slightly longer pause separates the first code from the next one if there is any. A code 55 means the computer is done displaying codes. Post back with the codes.
