In praise of dealerships

I don’t think you will receive a reply for that topic of discussion, try a simpler topic.

Hopefully such a thing is very rare.

Sadly, customers scamming the dealership . . . or attempting, but getting called out . . . isn’t unheard of

We had a list of known scammers and if one of them showed up, we were instructed to send them straight to the service manager, who politely told them to get out and don’t let the door hit them on the way out :smiling_imp:

Once again folks, once you post something you have no control over the comments and it will meander at will. You can try to redirect but good luck. This isn’t grade school.

I’m curious.
Whenever any of you are dealing with the Finance person in the dealer, instead of sitting down in their office as they want you to do, do you ever just stand in their doorway?

Stand in the doorway ?? There are papers to be signed even if it is a finance or cash transaction .

Lexus negotiated with me to $500 down from the asking price and was willing to let me walk away if I didn’t accept.

At the time, CARFAX and KBB showed that my car value was $34k. The dealer asking price was 28k because the car fax reported the car being involved in a minor accident, where the back bumper was replaced and the side mirror was cracked, and the side skirt slightly bent.

They agreed to offer me 3,000 more for my trade in compared to what Toyota was offering.

So the negotiation went well.

Ps. Toyota offered me $7,000 for my Camry at 76,000 miles.

Lexus agreed at $10,000.

Well, George, I thought a check has to be cleared first before one can take possession of a vehicle ?

Otherwise, lots of chaos.

A salesman once used the “can’t you make up your mind Woman?” tone to my mom, I was standing 10ft away only intending to prevent his death, his head was up his behind long before we’d walked onto the lot. Was impressive to watch him put both feet in his mouth while standing upright.

On 4 occasions, I have presented a personal check, and left the dealership with my new car shortly thereafter. The most recent one was a personal check for more than $50k, from an out-of-state bank. In every case, the check didn’t clear for a few days.

Same here.
If it’s during banking hours, they can call your bank to verify funds available.
Otherwise, they can do a soft pull on your credit.
They are also relying on the fact, writing a bad check is a criminal offense.

I’ve been told that, when you present your DL prior to doing a test drive, when they go to “make a copy of the DL” they are also doing a credit check. I’m not even sure if that is legal, but I’ve been told that this is SOP.

No. They can’t intimidate me. I’ll control the purchase decision whether they like it or not.

A few years ago my wife was shopping for a new car and had looked and researched extensively and decided what she wanted. She was working with a sales rep and had told him exactly the car she wanted. One of her conditions was no black–no black paint, no black interior. A week later he called her and said a car that had all the options she wanted just arrived. We go to the dealer and he shows her a car with a black interior. She tells him she specifically said no black, and he responded “Well the only color that really matters is how much green we can keep in your purse!” and offered a price reduction on the car.

And that in a nutshell is why she bought a Cadillac instead of a Lincoln (after reaming him a new hole).

When I was shopping for a '74 Volvo, the one that the salesman (primarily a Pontiac dealership that also sold Volvos) was pushing was painted orange. I said that I didn’t want an orange car, and he demanded to know why.
What an a-hole!

Speaking of cabin air filters, I tried to order one last night from the dealer I have used before. I gave up in frustration. Said I had an account and couldn’t order as a guest. Don’t remember ever joining but needed my user name. Nothing worked. They’ll reset your password but not user name. I just ordered it from someone new.
Normally they just use your email to see if you have ordered before. Hope this is not a new trend.

I recently went through one of those endless loops with a merchant that I used many years ago. Nothing worked, so now it looks like I will never be able to order from them again… unless they clean-up their act.

My wife and I went to the Dodge dealer to look a Dakota I had seen while working, it was a low mileage 1999 loaded RWD, we always go vehicle shopping dressed like we had been cleaning house all day… lol
Well the salesman came out of the used car trailer in his 3 piece suit and asked me what I was looking for and I pointed at the truck up on the hill by itself, he goes sure but let me tell you about this truck, I said no, show me that one, he said ok but I have this one over here, I said nope again show me That One, well after trying to show me the other 6 trucks of different make and models on the lot he said well let me go get the keys to that Dakota, I said, you know what, you wasted my time so I am out of here,
So we walked up the hill to the new car lot and a nice lady very casually dressed came out and asked could she help us, I said sure, can you get the keys to that Dakota and she said why yes and we all 3 walked back down there and walked by his desk and she grabbed the keys and I just smiled at him, well after the test drive we drove around the back of the building and my wife said oh oh I want to drive that one, so she asked the lady if we could test drive ir, after the drive we bought the brand new 2000 model and the 1999 truck that I had my eye on… As we were leaving we both slowly drove by and gave the stuck up idiot salesman the universal wave in the 2 vehicles that we just bought… He didn’t look very happy… I even traded in my old 1992 truck in site unseen… lol

I had bought a few vehicles from that location before, and new the Parts manager …

If you want an eye-opener, google Gerry Catena, he was Ray’s father, and a very interesting character.
