Dear Tom and Ray I have a 2000 Hyundai

Accent that the CEL came on.It showed a

bad Cat converter. So I replaced it and the

light went out but not much performance

improvement untill I changed the fuel filter.

The cel light returned and showed a transmission speed sensor code.Sometimes the car runs fairly good and others it doesn’t.Is this a costly fix and

a do it your selfer? Thanks guys

You need a mechanic who is a good diagnostician, rather than just a “parts replacer”.
As an example of what I am talking about, there is no code that tells you that a catalyic converter is “bad”. There are codes that suggest a problem with the cat, but those same codes could indicate a problem with an oxygen sensor or with relating wiring.

Maybe your cat needed to be replaced, maybe not. Maybe your VSS needs to be replaced, maybe not. The good news is that this part is not very expensive, and on most cars it is not difficult to replace. I have to admit that I am not familiar with the VSS placement on a Hyundai Accent, however.

Ask friends, relatives, co-workers and neighbors for the name of a mechanic who is a real diagnostician, and you will likely spend a lot less money on repairs in the future.
