I’m looking for a hybrid car that is also all wheel drive. Is there such a car?

How large a vehicle do you need? If you are looking for a car, there is no hybrid awd car that I know of. Subaru’s new (2012) Impreza has the best mpg for an awd car, and would likely be quite a bit cheaper than the awd hybrid SUVs.

Don’t forget GM. They have full-size pickups and SUV’s that are hybrids.

The more you increase the “drag” on a hybrid system in terms of work load, the less the advantage of having one. AWD/4wd trucks and cars is where diesel has such an advantage and it will be a while before anything but a fwd compact will be most cost effective and why I would not recommend hybrid awd.

Shortly, I see a future feature like a compact Focus option which may already get 40 plus mpg, adding a small electric motor under the trunk that could add power on demand and at lower speeds to the rear wheels and aid handling over all. The power would not be stored but comes from a HD generator battery combo. I don’t see such a feature adding more than 100 lbs of weight, costing no more than $1K and supplying the awd needs of 99% of the awd cars on the road while increasing the reliability of cars when subjected to stresses of awd use. This is where the electric motor shines. Are you listening Subaru?

I can still see an advantage if your commute is right for it. Most of the time you won’t be using AWD/4WD…And if you have a nice rural commute with decent amount of stop and go driving…then for the 99% of time you’re just driving in 2wd mode…a hybrid could be a big advantage.

I hear you within the same model lines. But a Subaru legacy running around in awd, all the time, does quite well compared to ANY hybrid awd system. The extra weight posses a penalty and the additional expense makes it’s savings questionable. Now, a Prius to commute with and a used awd/4wd truck or Escape parked and ready would be better on gas and cheaper to buy than a $40K Toyota Hylander when commuting is involved. The cost of them just doesn’t add up when a standard Rav v6 does nearly as well as Highlander Hybrid for 40% less $$$$.
Legacy 31 mpg HW
Highlander Hybrid 29mpg
Escape 34mpg
If it offered much advantage, you would have seen them in trucks and SUVs in general from all makes by now. Next year, the Subaru regular Impreza awd is expected to top out at 36 mpg highway

Yeah, somehow, I suspect that–13 years later–the OP has purchased a vehicle… maybe even 2 or 3.
