You’re right. I totally missed the decimal point.

But that could have been worded better. No need to reference the width and length. Just say 1/2” OSB.

Already did it, called “diesel”. No easy way to do that with gasoline.

Whatever, no yard is selling under sized sheets of plywood. They have been converting to metric though for a while. A supply chain issue. There i# no law concerning usb drives. There are laws concerning commercial weights and measures though. The folks are out there every day checking that a gallon equals a gallon and that an ounce on the meat scale is accurate.

Back in the early '50s we often shopped at the local family owned grocery store. The grocer would break a carton of eggs in half if you only wanted a half dozen, they also ran tab for the local families on index cards in a box on the counter… They also had a small meat counter where they sliced various cheeses and meats. I often stopped by with my friends and he would sometimes slice the ends off the baloney roll for us kids to munch on…

But I do remember my mother joking with him to “take his thumb off the scale…” 😂

All wood is thinner than its canonical size. Home Depot and Lowe’s (and everybody else?) list actual sizes. Ply is always 1/32” thinner. ½ should be 15/32, which would be closer to .47. Home Depot doesn’t have 15/32, just 7/16, doesn’t call it ½ Lowe’s has 1 kind of 15/32, says it’s .451 inch.

Natural gas is sold by its energy content, in therms, not volume. Some must have more ethane.

It’s a conversion done at the time of sale. The only way to know how much you used is by measuring the volume delivered.

I dunno, when we had the lp tank filled at the cabin, rhe bill always was in gallons. The tank had a gallon capacity. Never heard of a truck delivering therms. Of course it gets cold in South Dakota so maybe life is different diwn south. The gas grill tank is sized in gallons but weight determines how much is in there.

Yeah, liquid propane is sold in gallons. I just had my 500 gallon propane tank and my 250 gallon oil tank filled in the same month (ouch!). Natural Gas (NG) is often sold in therms but it is just a conversion from volume to energy. I haven’t had NG since I lived in WI. Around here, it’s way too expensive to run underground supply lines…too much ledge to contend with to be cost effective. They don’t call it the Granite State for nothing…

Come to think about it, the natural gas bill with the power bill is in cubic feet. Guess it doesn’t matter, a rose is a rise, and a bill is in dollars.

LP is all propane; natural gas isn’t a fixed composition.

The conversion factor is different for different compositions.

This is a recent observation that my wife made and I immediately thought of this posting… Our home has a high efficiency furnace that uses natural gas for fuel… The combustion is so complete that the exhaust gas can vent up a PVC pipe and all the moisture that is left over from the combustion drains out of the A/C drain vent hose… The hose drains onto the driveway leaving a wet area… And due to the recent cold spells the wet area is much larger than normal… We were looking at the larger than normal wet area and the wife remarks, “Well, that proves they are adding water to the gas…” 🤣

Just so you all know, my wife worked for several years as the Part Manager at a R.E. Michel Company, a wholesale distributor of HVACR (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration) equipment, parts, and supplies, and she went through several of their schools to get trained… (She knows they are not adding water to the Natural gas…)

My sister put a new very efficient Carrier gas (NG) furnace in her home maybe 10 years ago. Same thing. It just vents with a PVC pipe out the side of the building.

Expect NG prices to rise with the new trade deal recently announced with Europe. We’re selling our NG production supply to Europe and it’s going to tighten our own domestic supply. This will drive up NG and Electric rates.

The other thing affecting supply is the massive use of natural gas fired generators for server farms providing AI.

4 of these server hubs use more electricity in a year than all the EVs in the US combined. There are several thousand of them scattered across the US.

The newer condensing furnaces achieve their efficiency through improved thermal extraction. They have multiple heat exchangers to fully utilize all the heat in the flue gases. The condensate is acidic and so some have treatment of the condensate, especially if a condensate pump is needed.

Semiconductor manufacturing is another big user of electricity. For example, TSMC consumes more than 8% of all the energy produced in Taiwan and it’s increasing every year.

Not really. Sandisk fine print is “actual user storage less”. If they can sell 62GB or 61.5GB of “actual user storage” as 64GB which they are now doing, then they can also sell 40GB advertised as 64GB. There is no end to this.

Do you know of a way to show the actual amount of memory on the device internally? I get that it may be 64GB including defective storage blocks. It means that they’re selling a partially defective product that is not advertised that way, except for the fine print.

Nope, there is 64 GB of memory, a small part of which is used for system bookkeeping. What is so hard to understand?

+1
Some of my neighbors were concerned that I might not have a working furnace, because they no longer saw anything coming from my chimney on cold days. I took them to the backyard, and showed them the exhaust vent on the back wall of the house. And, of course, just as with other forms of combustion, it produces water vapor, which drips occasionally from that vent.

I think that I am one of the few on my street who switched to a high efficiency NG furnace.

Well yes, actually. That is exactly how I described it. The memory has 64GB natively. The amount you have left after formatting is what you described. They don’t know how you will be using their product and various operating systems use more or less to format the drive. So they advertise the native amount of storage.

> [@TheWonderful90s](#):
>
> I get that it may be 64GB including defective storage blocks.

No, that is already accounted for. The memory array is larger than the intended final size. Bad cells, segments or blocks are skipped by the sector mapping. So that they can guarantee full size and not suffer yield issues in production.

> [@TheWonderful90s](#):
>
> Do you know of a way to show the actual amount of memory on the device internally?

Sure. You need to write some software to interface with the driver, bypassing the OS interface.

> [@TheWonderful90s](#):
>
> It means that they’re selling a partially defective product that is not advertised that way, except for the fine print.

Well, that is not all that uncommon. Most are not even disclosed in any way. Take modern displays. During manufacturing, they illuminate all pixels through the various combinations. If a pixel lights up when it is not supposed to, they zap it with a laser to destroy it. You never notice the missing elements with your eye but it produces an overall better picture to eliminate these rogue pixels. Are you going to rail against not getting exactly 1,000,000,000 pixels? 😃
