I Sincerely Hope That None Of You Home-Made Airplane Experimenters Fly Over My House.
Oh, and if you’ve got family, buy some extra life insurance. That will prove to be a better move than debating what type of engine, etcetera. Trust me. I’ve got decades of aviation experience.

Here here.
If I was building an experimental plane, I’d opt for a VW TDI diesel engine. It’s not significantly heavier than the gas models, makes 50% more power per gallon of fuel (range), and runs better with less cooling (heat is good, not bad with a diesel). That, and the turbo keeps it working well at high altitudes.
Time to bring airplanes into the 21st century, finally.
Anyone ever heard of Rotax? I think one of those would be cheaper and safer overall than the subi. Frankly the whole experimental thing sounds silly when you can get a tried and true cesna or the like for 20,000 to 40,000 ready to fly and it probably is safer. Well none of this is safe. I recommend building a kit car instead
