The GOP is not racist in my opinion. Their targeting of minorities in key swing states and trying their best to influence voting rights during the last election, so apparent, even the courts were forced to curb their actions…none of their actions were racist even though it was directed by in some cases, tacitly supported in others and never squelched by the RNC. That’s not racist, that 's just politics and denying minorities voting rights to win an election is accepted as good strategy. Even members of the GOP still stand by and accept it as a way of doing things, never realizing what’s good for the goose is good for the gander and if they ever find themselves in a minority and their voting rights were called into question, we all agree they will still accept it as normal operating procedure.
It’s just a question of semantics.
wow. this discussion has been going on for a year and a half
And if only the people who mattered we’re paying attention, the worlds problems would have been solve months ago !!!
well if I was king of the world I would get Ford to make me a new 1975 supercab, because mine is falling apart faster than I can put it back together. oh, and we would all have to love our neighbors. I’ve also learned recently that we really should not judge others 'cause we have no idea what they have to deal with .
George Carlin, Congress is the opposite of Progress! Now I could read through the 145 pages I missed, but in the back of my mind is they want to pass so many laws it will spark a revolution, then if successful we can write off the national debt. Every new law is the opposite of it’s name it seems to me. Back me up and quote an example. First from me, right to hunt bill, no restrictions previously, now you need a permit.
Somehow Randy Newman can speak the truth plainly so that it goes uncensored. But or course, his lyrics of New Orleans and other southern tragedies gives him some leeway.
@mikeinnh Hmmm, the only thing that’s important in the Bible belt is how you feel about abortion?
That’s really a silly thing to say and shows you really haven’t spent much time anywhere else. I’ve lived in South Dakota and Minnesota and really it boils down to conservatives here just don’t believe the govenment needs to spend a lot of money, that people should be left alone to sink or swim, and work hard for what you get. Nobody really talks about abortion except the Catholics that are required to by the Pope. I’m sure most don’t really think its a good idea though but most people are too tired from working to make a lot of babies anyway.
Maybe this is the Bible Belt position
Governor Bryan and the GOP legislators are falling all over each other hoping to be the most adamant opponent of abortion in the state. Politicians have found success with supporting Personhood above all other issues.
That's really a silly thing to say and shows you really haven't spent much time anywhere else
I lived right in the heart of the bible belt for 3 years…Sorry but I stand by my statement…I suggest you go there and find out for yourself.
Nobody really talks about abortion except the Catholics that are required to by the Pope.
Living in an area that’s 70% Catholic… It’s NOT even an issue except for some very small fringe groups who pop-up every now and then. Even the conservative republicans don’t mention Abortion here because it’s a non political issue. And those small fringe groups are NOT Catholic groups. We’re NOT closing down abortion clinics like the bible belt south is. Massachusetts and NH is a very very Catholic populated area.
A great many in Mississippi have jumped into the Tea Party camp primarily because they are led to believe that the Tea Party is absolutely in favor of “personhood.” The supporters of that position begrudge the media for robbing the Tea Party of it’s power by subverting the Tea Party to all the unimportant causes such as illegal aliens and gun control. The flag waving Tea Party Mississippians are crusaders against abortion and they see Obamacare, Planned Parenthood, Medicaid and the Godless Democrats as supporters of murdering the unborn. It is often comical. And it is not unique to Mississippi. We just have the loudest and proudest fundamentalists.
Our " tea party" people are in favor of not having to give much back, for thier sucess(squeeze the nickle)-Kevin
Political leaders can find success by mustering the support of seemingly disparate groups into a cohesive, crusading team with each of the various groups being certain that they are the moving force. A strong loyalty and team spirit grows and each victory or defeat of the individual groups is felt by all. I can assure everyone that there is no great interest in eliminating capital gains taxes among the Tea Party in Mississippi. There is little, if any interest whatsoever in capital gains taxes as most “loud and proud” Tea Party activists in this state are clueless of capital gains. The Tea Party activists in Mississippi are publicly rallied behind the “Personhood” issue and privately behind cutting benefits to blacks. And my conclusion regarding those issues results from keeping my ears open in places where people feel free to speak their mind. The Tea Party activists here are somewhat clueless. But they are CRUSADERS for their cause. And they are so out of touch that they are certain that the Tea Parties across the country are marching in step with them.
Every issue that is hotly debated today, Obamacare, cutting taxes, entitlements, anti union, etc, is looked at through the prism of putting the black people in their place and starving them into submission by the Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh and Gov Huckabee conservatives of Mississippi. And the Republican Party’s primary goal of cutting taxes can depend on the blind allegiance of Mississippi’s out of touch fundamentalists.
And the result ? The GOP has made deficit reduction at the expense of growing the economy. The administration has been reducing the deficit since the last fiscal year under Bush at a faster rate then any administration since WW2. And still, the republican controlled house refuses to pass any worthwhile stimulus package that according to economist with actual degrees, should still reduce the deficit but bring unemployment to the 6.5 percent level while reducing the deficit through growth at an even greater level. We have been forced by GOP incompetence when in office to grow the deficit at alarming rates since Reagan and now they have become the economy experts at deficit reduction.
The tea party activists have been the driving force of this recent incompetence, further illustrating their disdain for any govt. program by forcing debate on entitlements that their own constituents take part in and actually think are worthwhile. But, like lemmings, follow the blather of their leadership, guided by the tea party fear, to reduction and acceptance that these entitlements will not be there in the future…even thought they contribute nothing to the deficit and in reality, are one one the biggest growth stimulants in our economy. Cutting social security benefits over time will reduce needed spending in areas that are guranteed to support growth according to,ALL economists not working for FOX. There are precious few who transfers their SS checks to the Cayman Islands accounts. They are almost always spent in ways that stimulate the economy. That simple fact, seems to elude tea party supported legislators, only interested narrow minded political victories prompted by their hatred of a minority President.
Somewhat clueless is an understatement.
I found this very interesting
Mississippi’s sparse population seems to give it some cover on the racial coloring.
I vote regardless of color and judge poor performance regardless of color and I don’t tweet. And I gotta say after voting for him twice, I think he is going down as one of the most remote and disconnected presidents we’ve had in a long time. Second I think that he wasn’t so much elected the second time as the competition was NOT elected. It has nothing to do with color but everything to do with competence and leadership. Once again its performance not color.
Ya know I remember Michelle bachman a face like fine brandy and a soul like turpentine! David bromberg jugband reference. Sure we keep our millions in fed farm and church funds but cannot afford to extend unemployment benefits (Bachman claims we cannot afford to extend unemployment benifits). Sure Social security you paid into for years is now an entitlement program, and we have to cut your rewards so we can do a tax cut (entitlement) for the rich. I loved the quote by Ed Schultz … those people must be shaking in their boots to think by a popular vote minimum wage could be increased, unions could bargain,(gone in WI Walker for pres! NOT!!!) etc.
Its a shame, these beings we sort of appoint to lord over us are so disconnected from reality(SS an entitlement,indeed)-Kevin
The truly wealthy are concerned about funding Social Security. In recent years FICA funds have exceeded the Social Security budget and the excess funds were spent as general fund taxes. Doing so took some of the pressure off the Treasury and covered some of the funds lost to tax cuts. Those who have been letting FICA funds cover their taxes see that situation coming to an end and wish to avoid paying their fair share on past present or future income.
Illegal immigrants are holding down wages to increase profits for investors but also, amnesty will bring 15 million young workers into the light where they will pay FICA taxes. Hopefully for the wealthy, amnesty will fund Social Security for a generation, leaving them to enjoy their gravy train.
Rod - While those maps are interesting…the one exception I have is the one about the “N” word usage. While it is a racially used word when one race describes African Americans…it’s NOT racial when an African American uses it to describe another African American. It is VERY VERY common within many African American communities and is NOT racially motivated. It’s just a slang they use among themselves.
I have lived the greater part of my life here in Mississippi, @Mike. And yes, “N” is confusing now as it has been for all my life. Like so many words context can make all the difference in the world. But here, the most common context is inflammatory and derisive.
