Hail to the Chief!

Going back in Minnesota history some, I’ll paraphrase: I believe it was 1860 as Col. Sibley collected farmers and able bodied men to march from St. Peter to New Ulm, MN to defend New Ulm from attack. That’s the militia. Wasn’t that long ago. Maybe things have changed some but maybe not. People still have the right and responsibility to protect themselves and their neighbors until reinforcements arrive. Now if it were the UK or Illinois, they’d be using hoes or rakes. Maybe we won’t be there next time like in Syria.

Like I said, I think the whole registration issue has nothing to do with crime prevention but simply as a first step to limitation and confiscation just like in the UK. It took them 30 years but they did it. So its a hard line drawn, period and Feinstein really has no right to tell me what I can own. Interesting that what was it 14? states that proposed additional gun laws actually loosened them up instead? And only four fearful states-NY, MA, CN, and Maryland actually passed anything. Says something. Some of these people seem to live in a fairy tale world where they think they can just write their poems, feed their goats, hoe their radishes and everything will be fine in the world.

Interesting poll going on on PBS’ website right now.

California’s new gun control proposal. One part that may be included would confiscate 166000 registered modern sporting rifles.
Still think it can’t happen in the future? Just by proposing the idea shows that that’s what they’re after in the long run

California is practicing it’s states rights given to it under the constitution. Let’s wait till something really happens. If not addressed by a federal law or the state then the supreme court, they are free to do what they want. Don’t move there. Southern states advocated slavery at one time. Some states limited voting rights recently. That doesn’t mean that either overwhelmed the United States…If you really want to own your sporting rifle, move to Maine. Their economy depends a lot directly and indirectly on hunting. It won’t happen there cause money talks…gurantee it. Wait, California automobile pollution controls have been a model for Maine…oops, here they come to take our .22s.
Besides, you can always trust those survivalist mags and guns and ammo. They have our safety in mind and don’t care to benefit at all from selling m15s to fend off the Caliornia HP s from taking our air rifles.

California is Feinstein’s state. She probably figured since her federal bills failed(and the others, too), she’d enact what she could in her own state

Interesting that even a very liberal PBS poll still is 95% against changing current law. 2nd amendment though is the US Constitution so if CA gets too wacko like DC did, it can be overturned at the federal level. I bought my Ithaca pump shotgun when I was 13. Bought it from a friend of my Dads for $35 and never did a background check. Bought my .22 without a background check and bought the .303 without one. Haven’t killed or robbed anyone yet but some seem to think these purchases were a problem and a loop hole they have to plug. Just nonsense and we all know the ultimate goal behind it.

Where in the second amendment does it say that it is a personal right to own a firearm ?

please tell me that’s sarcasm you’re using, dag

The Supreme Court already determined that, but there are thousands of rights and liberties we have as citizens that are not spelled out that we exercise everyday. Simply because the constitution does not say we may own an automatic 9mm, doesn’t mean we can’t.

It doesn’t say that I can get in my car and drive to Texas if I want but I certainly can and no one can stop me. I can buy any property I want anywhere I want, and so on. Not every liberty is spelled out and the restrictions were meant to be modest.

Reagan said that it only takes one generation to lose liberties. Even though I didn’t vote for him I respect his concerns. Its up to our generation to make sure those liberties are not lost for the next generation.

@bscar, Just to stretch this debate out and Somewhat in jest but a case can be made that the framers used “persons” in the bill of rights when talking about individual rights and “peoples” when talking about collective rights.

Read through the amendments and you can easily see what I mean. The second amendment only refers to the collective right of the people to form a militia as we had no standing army at that time. The reason that the right to bear arms was argued successfully I believe was as much a " persons right to own property" and arms are property.

Either way, this right whether you argue it as an individual or group right, is predicated on the subject of the statement that it will be regulated. So regulation of arms by the federal govt. for use by persons or people’s be they under age, criminals, using bazookas and yes, assault weapons is all supported and under the prerogative of the federal govt. as described by the constitution. It has nothing to do with infringing on anyones right to bear arms as they can still be can still be regulated. Otherwise, opponents must be for anyone, anytime owning any weapon or firearm.

As you can see by this debate explanation courts could not use the second amendment alone to secure a “persons” right to bear arms. And, IMHO, I agree and the second amendment alone is no reason to provide one with that backing. Even the courts when upholding gun rights said that using that amendment alone would be a loosing argument for a gun rights “person”.

It amazes me that partisan politics can be so successful in drawing out and developing single issue constituencies of such fanatic, myopic loyalties. There are pockets of pro gun fanatics who publicly support armed rebellion if faced with any restrictions on magazine capacity. These people will vote to support the Republican party in the face of a failing economy.Such people make Nancy Pelosi’s opinion much more palatable to reasonable people.

Don’t get me wrong, I totaly disagree with those that think we’re headed to an armed insurrection but 29% is not necessarily a pocket of fanatics. Many many normal good people are just plain tired and concerned with the direction the country is heading in.

While I didn’t agree with Bush either, this administration has not shown much understanding of the economy and how to grow it in the past five years. Remember cap and trade? Increased EPA regulations? Car mileage standards? Not to mention throwing the health industry into chaos. Of course he has managed to push gun and ammo sales to record levels so must know something about business.

While I didn't agree with Bush either, this administration has not shown much understanding of the economy and how to grow it in the past five years.

Completely disagree with that. 2 main reason.

#1) Almost every single bill that Obama tried to past was vehemently blocked by the GOP. The bills that were finally passed were drastically compromised.
#2) Obama started out with the Country in the WORSE recession since the Great Depression. That’s one big hole to dig out of. The first year and a half we were still heading down. If Bush or someone with Bush’s same policies continued for another 4 years…we’d be a third world country by now with unemployment well past the numbers of the Great Depression.

Increased EPA regulations?

Excellent…Personally I like breathing fresh air and drinking clean water. It never hurt the economy in the 70’s when Nixon created the EPA.

Car mileage standards?

Again that never hurt the economy when Ford was president.

The thing you have to keep in mind is that the country is split 50-50. That means that folks have to come from the right and left to meet in the middle. That has just not happened. No wonder and thank heavens his bills were blocked.

I’m not sure my abiltiy to buy oil stain for my house has an impact on your ability to breath or drink fresh water. $60 a gallon while it lasts for a few years yet or use a latex requiring primer, and clear coat. Makes a lot of sense and helps the economy? Just one small example. This is not the 70’s where much work was needed but after 40 years of increased regulation, its time to back off a little.

We must understand that the 2nd Amendment is every bit as sacrosanct as the 21st. And as the pro-gun factions become more bizarre and fanatic they lose more of the middle of the road crowd who enjoy the “live and let live” approach to life.

The present administration has gotten no help from the GOP. Unfortunately, Bush got plenty of help from the Dems to put us in this mess. It takes a lot longer to repair a wreck then it does to make one. The healthcare industry was already in chaos. Maybe having millions uninsured is sanity for those with insurance and chaos is is an attempt to save lives. That’s opposite the way the uninsured feel. They welcome the chaos.

I related a while back about my neighbor whose daughter lost her life due to a misdiagnosed appendicitis. She was working in an another state, young and uninsured. She waited in the emergency room for 6 hrs for a surgeon to see her and died shortly after. That’s what the uninsured face. Similar situations happen to thousands. Now we complain because a president and a party wants to save lives. The world is upside down.

Not to be too hard on the guy but were we saying “the last guy made a mess of things so its OK for you to make a mess too”? No, I think we expected some fixing of things and not continually blaming someone else. Will 8 years do it? We’ve only got 3 left.

I think a lot of people are a little concerned with the Affordable Care Act and its impact. Somehow the math is not working. At least for me anyway, our rates have already gone up $150 a month and we haven’t even started. I had faith 5 years ago but it is running out without some clear action.

You must have faith for Voo-Doo to work its magic,@Bing. Ronald Reagan didn’t walk on water while in office. He walked on the $billions that were just below the water, hidden from the public’s view, laid by the fed and later picked up by Wall St bankers. But in retrospect, Fox and Friends like to read the fairy tales and enjoy their fantasies.

@bing
A lot of people, should be concerned about the affordable care act, mostly insurance companies whose profits are limited. It isn’t perfect but could be a lot better if the GOP was the GOP of old and actually understood that reducing healthcare cost, reduced the deficit and according to the CBO, insuring everyone does just that. It used to be the GOP looked for ways to save lives instead of take them.

That has just not happened. No wonder and thank heavens his bills were blocked.

But you’re saying that Obama’s to blame because HE hasn’t cleaned up Bush’s mess yet. Now you say it’s GOOD that the GOP blocked all of his bills. Which is it?? We have no idea how good Obama’s bills would be…since they were almost ALL blocked or watered down.

I'm not sure my abiltiy to buy oil stain for my house has an impact on your ability to breath or drink fresh water

Why can’t you buy oil base stains??? I just bought 2 gallons last week.

This is not the 70's where much work was needed but after 40 years of increased regulation, its time to back off a little.

Some things yes…other things no. We still have some major polluters in this country…and they are NOT being regulated…at least not much. Problem we’re having is NOT punishing the polluters who’ve been polluting for years. These are polluters breaking laws that have been on the books for years and years.

Someone mentioned the “uncivil” war ,the North wouldnt win it now(the Rebs, got guns with riflings and shoes)when it takes you 4 years to put down an insurrection next door on a neighbor with half the population and a fourth the resources, its nothing to feel good about, its a good thing that Lee made his big mistake"Gettysburg" hard to tell how long that needless conflict would have dragged on.Most people dont understand what that war was really about( hint it wasnt really that much about slavery{it was already on the way out} another hint it gave us the federal system we have today. Please check the true history of tariffs and protectionism and states rights and eventually it led up to the bully state the US is now.
As an aside my “conservative” bosses after they got me disposed of,went to a gun show and bought a bunch of replica assault weapons and the like(most of them already have an arsenal to start with).Has anyone heard what a " brick" of 22 cartridges goes for now? when I was a youngster, you could buy a brick for around $7-$8 -Kevin
P.S no gas and the car sits
