. In 1970 our Army Reserve company was 90% people just like me that had joined instead of being drafted.
It’s a lot better to join then to be drafted. When you join you have a lot more choices. When drafted you have 0 choice…even what branch your drafted into. So back in the late 60’s early 70’s…joining the reserves or even active duty was far better being drafted.
Dont watch jerry springer-too puerile.No.35,more money into research on external combustion engines-Kevin
You have to wonder how the new groups would react to serving if they got drafted instead of volunteering. And how many signed up thinking it’d be like a video game
Reality bites-Kevin
In 1968 I was drafted and a Marine Corps recruiter pulled myself and several others aside and asked if we would go to the USMC instead of the army. I’m not sure if they could do so without our permission, when they assured us that we could go to basic in San Diego we all took the offer. Being drafted was a 2 year contract and a voluntary enlistment was for 4 years. I had no desire to spend more time in the military than absolutely necessary.
A lot of people joined who had low draft numbers just so they didn’t get drafted into the Marines or the Army front-lines. The death rate for airmen was a LOT lower then for front-line Army or Marines. Same for Navy personal (Unless you were on a PT boat). My older brother got very low draft number and joined the Navy…He was stationed to the 6th fleet and most of his tour was in the middle east or the states.
I had a high draft number but decided to enlist anyway. The difference is, you had a greater choice. Working in the OR in a hospital, driving an ambulance was certainly different from being worked on. I would recomend that all young people serve a stint in the military. There are so many support rolls, you need not be in combat. There are lots of ways you can serve. I would like to see mandatory military service while retaining some exemptions from service that existed then from the draft; like serving a Morman mission. That is indeed high risk in some areas. You can get injured easily when someone slams a door in your face, especially here in Maine in January.
No.36-English would be the national language-No.37-one third of the new cars should be diesel in 5 yrs-Kevin
And No. 38 would be massive tax cuts for the wealthy ,as long as they used the money to buy things-if they just tried to hoard the wealth, the tax structure would remain the same.(I never understood how having millions of dollars in wealth sequestered around in different saving accounts helped the average person)-Kevin [ seems to me like you have circulate the money for it to do any good]
If you own 3 mansions and your corporation furnishes you with chaufered limosines and luxury jets what would you spend your $200 million income on each year? One week’s income would be more than enough to buy all the gaudy fashions, extravagant jewelry and flashy cars that one would want. At some point wealth just becomes a game of grabbing more and using what you grabbed to get even more the next time you reach. Like winning video games, the wealthy just keep racking up the $$$$$core and laughing at the people who are “lazy” and live pay check to pay check. A 50% “fair” tax would be a fantastic bargain for them.
After a few million its just score keeping, nothing more. As Mittens said in a video I saw last night, “When I was young I thought I needed to be rich and famous to be happy. . . and I was right.” His sons just smiled and gave an attaboy as they walked off stage. Brought to mind the other thing he said, and I paraphrase: “I know what its like to be poor. We were so poor once we had to sell some stock.” These folks are just in a whole 'nother sphere and have no idea about the rest of the world. Its a matter of power and control over others and a measure of what is owed to the landed gentry from the peasant farmers.
We talk about saving money and building wealth but money not spent really does no one any good except our heirs and bankers.
RK,I’ve been around a few wealthy people who insisted they didnt have any money-Kevin
I know a couple of millionaires. I work for one. The guy I work for is a very hard working and doesn’t flash his money around. He drives an 8yo Caravan and lives in a 2000sq/ft Colonial that’s 30yo. He probably spends only 1/5 of what he makes.
He is out of touch with most of us. He doesn’t understand why some employees are struggling when he pays them so well (and they are paid well). He has a hard time comprehending that when you get paid $100k in MA and have 2 kids in college that you might not have enough money to go on these elaborate golf vacations that he organizes every year. While he’s a nice guy and very smart…he just has no comprehension of what it’s like NOT be a millionaire (his Dad is extremely wealthy). He just doesn’t understand what everyone else has to go through to raise 3 or more kids…What it’s like if all of a sudden one of your parents gets sick and you now have to cover part of their nursing home cost. He even said one time that he doesn’t have health insurance and was seriously considering not offering it to his employees…At least here in MA he’s REQUIRED to. So we’re safe from that. He just doesn’t understand what the average middle-class or poor go through every day just to survive. He’s NEVER been without anything his whole life.
Well Mike, you know that’s a shame, and I’m glad that the government does work to the common man’s advantage occasionally. I do know that if the social security act had never occurred, there would be a lot more totally destitute seniors-Kevin

Obamacare! it should be repealed! Oh, wait a minute it’s Romneycare.
No.39 would be-no cruelty to animals or other people( of course people take first priority).No.40-no more sanctioning war(crime would be crime,no more of this political nonsense, seems like we always end up backing a corrupt regime anyway.No. 41 would be requiring a true majority to pass laws.No. 42-taking steps toward a true Democracy-Kevin

My dog’s a people - just ask her!
“…seems like we always end up backing a corrupt regime anyway”
That’s the problem with a 2-party system. If they’re all bums, you’re stuck.
“No. 41 would be requiring a true majority to pass laws”
It’s already that way. Better than 50% in the House, better than 50% in the Senate, and then the President votes. There’s only one of him, so it’s quite binary; but still over 50%.
“No. 42-taking steps toward a true Democracy”
I’m still enthralled with our republic, or if you prefer, representative democracy. We just have to do something about the turds in the punch bowl.
I agree JT,my cats are people too.I really wasn’t referring specifically to the house and senate, I just don’t consider 50. something a true majority, the other 49. something have a voice also. I favor 2\3s majority and I don’t like the aye and nay system either. The Republic is good until you have too many unelected bureaucrats and powerful agencies that don’t have to answer to the general public. The poop remains because money, not decency, puts people in office. The way things are run in the government, I do not consider it a representative democracy-Kevin
"The Republic is good until you have too many unelected bureaucrats and powerful agencies that don’t have to answer to the general public.
How are all these rogue bureaucrats causing us harm?
