Why do people wear any kid of jewelry ? Wy do drivers parade around in ultra large rims with their sound system blaring ? There are societies other then ours who mutilate their bodies and show off their scars and body jewelry as a matter of fashion. We aren’t the first.
I am of the opinion that a significant proportion of the population of this country have a difficult time managing their income, personal finances and both work and personal responsibilities. Yes, that makes me sound quite arrogant and superior. But rather than mince words to be politically correct and offend no one I’ll take the heat and continue. This country must find some financial back stop that includes intervention and a “socialist” regime to give those who are unable to manage their own lives some agency offering support with required intervention to those who are entitled. We have allowed the bottom feeding predators to rob those who are somewhat challenged in managing their money by allowing the proliferation of 600% check into cash shops, tote the note rip-off car lots, lotteries selling tickets at every corner business in the slums of cities and casinos that find their money base is in 1c, 5c and 25c slots. All that and intelligent “statesmen” just can’t figure out what’s going wrong. DUUUUUUUUH. We are allowing tax dollars to encourage illegitimate births and allowing ghettos to grow that are the breeding ground for crime and then we want to condemn the criminals.
You make some good points. I would like to take it a step further and say that we are raising a generation of consumers who can’t handle money, but often through no fault of their own. When my kids were looking to buy a house…we discovered.houses that were over priced but with rediculusly low interest rates making payments that were some what affordable.
Couple that with low interest rates providing absolutely no vehicle other then the stock market that made saving worthwhile, we forced our kids into making poor choices. Money markets and CD’s that pay less then 1% interest…does anyone get how that can warp ones idea of preparing for the future ? Kids did what their parents said…when times are tough and you can’t save, save with real-estate. Don’t worry, even if the prices are high, it’s still a good investment to buy a home. Put it there and the stock market. The rest is history…and we blame the “kids” for poor choices ? I put the blame where it belongs…right at the top. The money hoarders are still making money keeping interest rates low while the rest of us are locked into big govt. dependency, because, let’s face it, contrived capitalism isn’t as fair as it used to be.
If we want our kids to make better choices, first, we must put them in an environment where there ARE CHOICES. They can’t afford to save, buy a house, pay healthcare or get an education. The values we want them to aspire to are out of reach…it’s OUR FAULT not theirs.
I’ll take it a step further. Roosevelt fought the republicans to maintain a labor board, and lost, this is nothing new and the pendulim swings from one side to another

Michelle Bachman has probaly wanted for nothing in her life and cannot understand why most of thr population is not as well off as she. There is a group of people that believe in a form of “manifest destiny” or something…They believe they are special and richly deserve everything they have(either a gift from God or thier own"hard" work) and feel the havenots are lazy and havent worked hard enough. In my own little corner of the world a friend was harrased last night mostly because he is Black, this place is crawling with bootlickers and pro nazis-Kevin
Let me make a dumb remark about Michelle Bachman as it never stopped me before.
If Bachman gains twenty pounds, she will loose her next election to office. There is no other reason why she should be holding office while representing a constituency who feel there is a place for attractive lunatics in politics.
dagosa, there were so many “experts” advising us to buy real estate 10 years ago and the banks were so eager to write a mortgage for you and the real estate agents were so sure that the price would soon jump higher so you had to act fast and many people jumped into that runaway train that took them off the tracks and down a dirt road to no where. Several friends jumped into the flipping market and lost everything they owned. The sleaziest con men then were the ‘lease to purchase’ developers. They followed the ‘tote the note’ used car lot game plan by getting sizable deposits with rent payments that increased after 12 months and assured that the buyer would default and the house could be easily repossessed to be quickly leased again. One of the crooks threatened to sue me for discouraging young families from getting involved. And we were supposed to believe that Fannie and Freddie were the cause of the collapse.
I could never live in Michelle Bachman’s district. I couldn’t be surrounded by so many utterly stupid people.
Glad you brought that up @rodknox. When looking for a house my daughter and son in law finally gave in to our adamant though solicited advice NOT to buy beyound their means which the so called “reputable banks” were insisting on. .by staying conservative and starting with a “starter home” they weathered the rough times with ease and now live in the house of their choice. They could never had done it by loosing equity, listening to those mortgage thieves the first time around.
I’m afraid the worse case scenerio played itself out for too many who didn’t get financial conservative advice. It certainly wasn’t comming from some of the best of lenders.
, I feel banks evolved into these schemes by the artificially low interest interest rates and lack of oversight. Like I said before…it started from the top, not the bottom. To blame home buyers is like blaming kids for miss using their allowance. The person in charge of handing out the funds has the ultimate responsibility…they failed.

Buying within your means is crucial to financial stability. I know several people who lost their homes during the down turn. All of them had bought homes which I consider well beyond their means…and the economy went south…they had a hard time making payments.
It used to be @mikeInNh that lending institutions actually looked at your net worth and inome then made a reasonable decision on what you could afford and advised you appropriately. The banks knew ultimately that some one would sell these packages perhaps and all they wanted to do was move the money and lay claim to the house. Insisting that you qualify because the TWO incomes you make warrenty you getting a large mortgage is wrong in many cases.
Back when we applied, generally banks would only looked at one income and assume one of you at some time might loose their job. That’s the conservative, that’s the right thing to do. That’s what we insisted our kids do. Bottom line, the banks knew the difference, and they should have been the adults in the room as they were the ones holding the money. Just say NO, if people can’t afford it during the " worst of times." even if the loan is during the " best of times". Taking out house loans is no time for “Great Expectations” .
Well once upon a time, the Guys and me figured out during a “rap” session what we could really afford,we figured out due to our low wages thet we better not have more then 30% of our income going out for, say a car payment. It worked out fairly good like that if you were single.I could afford a compact 2wd pickup each month(the monthly payment that is) and help the folks a little and eat, that was about all there was.
I just purchased my 92 nissan x-cab pickup and one of my bosses commented tp my first cousin thusly"Kevin always buys the cheapest thing he can" My cuz told him"thats all he can afford",so you see some people dont realize you dont have parity with them when you are getting paid a fraction of what they are getting.@Mike,that was a goodone,I dont know how any intelligent person could take MB seriously.Kevin
When I was looking at houses a few years ago(right after the crash, no less) one of the brokers was telling me I could afford something like $900/month for a house payment after doing a rough guesstimate for utilities each month. The problem was was that it left me nothing extra for myself. I knew I would need a new car in the future so I looked at lower priced houses using the $900 as a top of the line cutoff.
One piece of advice I was given was to never refinance the house unless you’re having trouble putting food on the table. My interest rate is something like 6.875% ad while I could refinance to a rate half that, my house payment is still less than $400/month, and I’m sending extra in each time. Another thing told to me, by the broker himself(different one from above) no less, was that if I made double payments every month, I’d have my house paid off in 7 years; told him my goal was 10 years.
Once my car is paid off, I’ll put that payment towards the house to get it paid down quicker.
“Societies other than ours”? Have you seen Dennis Rodman lately?
"Have you seen Dennis Rodman lately?"
The bling and the tats are blinding. A case where the package de-legitimizes the message.
I heard this morning that he thinks he’s an “intermediary” between North Korea and the U.S.
I hope the young Un doesn’t think we’re all like Dennis Rodman.
Is the young Kim truthfully the man in charge or does a military junta run that country? Un, like his father, seemed somewhat on a par with Sarah Palin. As in shackling deer for target practice for Sarah and 18 holes in one at his first effort at golf for Il.
Tough to know. I’m inclined to think it’s the military junta, but I’m mkaing that interpretation based on my western understanding of how people think. Perhaps they truely believe that the young Un is devinely gifted to lead their country.
Does Rupert Murdoch own KCTV? The media mogul may see that having all opposing opinions quashed by federal law enables a Nooooz network to weave all manner of magic to keep the public in line. And Rupert and his friends get to draw the line.
In 1970 the hostilities on the Korean DMZ were hidden from the free world press, though. And Rupert was peddling National Enquirers down under at the time. The Pentagon was apparently making efforts in preparation for a possible D-Day invasion of N Korea then. Marine Corps battalions with armored reinforcement were in rotation on to cold weather training at Mt Fuji and traveling in LSTs through the Yellow Sea.
