Mostly that was where the river ended so they had no choice but otherwise the Spanish then French and Napoleon finally figured it was all worthless territory and sold it to us. Jefferson was thrilled to insure a cheap way for his beloved farmers to ship their goods. Then came the interstates somewhat later to get back to cars and trucks.

Paterson Plank Road originally ran from Paterson to Jersey City, and it still exists–albeit with regular pavement–in Jersey City and Secaucus.
