The last thing I need to hear is, “I’m from the Government. I’m here to help you.”
Funny thing. I spent over 30 years working for a government tax agency. Yes I assessed millions of dollars of increased taxes, but I also gave millions of dollars in refunds, may of which the taxpayer had no idea was due.
Yea most assessments were increases, but then you would expect that there would be a number of people who would error on their own behalf rather than be paying too much. Like the police, the tax collectors are thee to serve the public. I wish I could say I believe the same for the politicians.
I love the idea of a gas tax now that gas is so cheap. I would even consider adding 75 cents with the provision that should the price of gas exceed $3 the tax would be appropriately reduced.
Perhaps if all those who advocate trying to solve the problem with a gas tax were to lose their jobs and have to take a new one 30 miles from home at a lesser pay check reality would strike and we wouldn’t have all these “hoorah, let’s tax the working class some more” people. And yes, the scenerio I present is real and becoming commonplace.
It’s easy to advocate some altruistic idea when it hurts others. It’s not when you’re the one being hurt.
