My check engine light came on . I then did the ignition procedure to show problem code. It said gas cap. I cannot get the light to go off.

Did you tighten or replace the gas cap? Yes? It will take a few engine start cycles for the light to go off.

What is this? Does the car report codes to you or do you have a tool to read the codes? If you ahve a tool, nearly all of them have a way to reset the error codes to turn off the light. If it is car-internal and you can’t reset the light, the light will go off by itself IF you fixed the problem.
