If my 1995 Jeep Wrangler doesn’t immediately start the first time I try it, it will not start again for about 8 to 12 hours, and it smells flooded. The only way to start it after this happens is to clutch start it. Do I need a new starter??

If the starter is cranking the engine, then you shouldn’t need a new starter.

If it’s flooded, it’s probably a fuel injection issue. If it cranks but won’t start, hold the accelerator all the way down to the floor while cranking. This tells the computer to allow more air and less fuel into the cylinders. This may get the Jeep started but doesn’t solve the underlying issue of why it’s prone to flooding.

Pull the vacuum hose form the fuel pressure regulator.

If fuel runs out, replace the regulator.

This MAY be the problem.

Thanks so much for your reply. The starter will crank and crank, so you are right about that. Holding the gas peddle all the way down doesn’t work - believe me, I’ve tried it. Someone else said regulator…
