Quite a few small fwd cars have/had ‘twist beam’ suspensions, like all the 1st gen Rabbits/Jettas and current gen Jetta. It’s compact and light, maximizes inside room. My GTI handled fine with it.
“It’s compact and light, maximizes inside room.”
And, perhaps the biggest reason for using a non-independent suspension in the rear is to hold down manufacturing costs! Let’s be realistic about Honda most likely having a goal of reducing both the cost and the complexity of these small cars.
But, for the car owner, the simplicity of a solid rear suspension does lead to lower maintenance costs in the long run, as rear alignment should not be needed unless the car sustains collision damage.
