I can’t even begin to remember all the people that I have asked to see their DL for X reason and they said all they had was an ID card… I would always look around like I was checking to see where the driver was, but I knew they were the ones driving, nothing you can really do about it…
What if their weren’t speeding?
Doesn’t matter. If the camera says you were speeding, then you were speeding. Good luck trying to prove any different.
Seems problematic to throw someone into bankruptcy when they didn’t actually speed, the only evidence of speeding being a camera which can’t be challenged.
That’s why Minnesota threw them out. People have a right to meet their accuser, and you can’t do that with a machine. Thing is you follow the money as they say and the money is with the folks that make sweet deals to provide the equipment. Everyone gets a cut of the profits.
Actually, there is something you can do. Get the license plate number, take a picture of the ID, and report them to the police. When the police see the car on the road they can stop it and see if the driver has a license or just an ID. In TN they may need a probable cause, and any non-functioning light should be enough to do the stop. Up to you whether you want to do this but it is an option.
I agree speed cameras are imperfect, but i really really want to see these speed demons slowed down.
They pretty much don’t stop cars anymore for minor infractions in the twin cities area. Folks with expired license tags or lights out etc. used to generate people with warrants. Since the last shooting when the guy took off, the policy was changed. The arguement
was that it discriminated against people that could not afford to pay their fines or renew their tabs.
Hard to do that when you are asking the custom for their DL just to type in a few numbers in the computer right in front of them, we did not photocopy it for any reason… I mean, would you let someone take a picture of your DL with their cell phone??? And why not?? I can think of one, Identity Theft!!!
So not always as black and white as some think it is…
There’s an inherent flaw with the idea that I should pay more for something than you do just because you think I can afford it.
The fine should be appropriate to the offense. Driving 62 in a 55? Meh. Driving 85 in a 55, sure, price goes up.
Speeding tickets are not about safety, they are about generating income. If you want to keep people from speeding, put a state trooper on the highway driving the limit and ticket anyone who passes him.
Yeah, that’s a great one, isn’t it? I travel through several work zones on 5 and 405 during my commute. At no time do I have the possibility of even reaching the speed limit, much less exceeding it.
I don’t know if any repair shops make photocopies of DLs. When I took cars for test drives they photocopied my DL. Certainly they need that from me since I’m driving off in their $40,000 car and that is a big difference. Just thought I’d ask.
When we provided customers with a loaner car while theirs was in for repairs we copied or took a pic of their driver license and proof of insurance.
If we were replacing or programming new keys for a car/customer we didn’t know, we would ask for registration and driver’s license to ensure we weren’t making keys for someone who didn’t own the car.
I think that is pretty standard practice. The Acura dealer said to bring the insurance card along. Body shops never asked for insurance though since they already had that obviously.
I was talking about repair shops… and we didn’t loan out cars, put them in a rental sometimes but no loaners. We had a great low rate with ERAC
