Hi folks. I have a 2016 Hyundai Elantra with 166 K miles on it. I bought it used with 48K miles. I have never changed the tranny fluid. The official owner’s manual says “No check. No service required.” The transmission shifts fine thus far. Most of the miles I put on the car are highway miles, I tend to accelerate slowly and I don’t do much stop and go traffic. If I have a mechanic or tranny specialist do a drain and flush of the tranny fluid and/or filter change , will this cause my trans to start slipping and thus cause me to have to pay big bucks to get it fixed? Thanks.

Hard to say.

My gut feeling is to have it changed now, and then likely never need to change it again.

according to your owner manual, the automatic transmission service is due every 60k for severe service . . . which most people fall under, imo

I agree with the others. Do it now

## Short answer:

**Changing your fluid cannot cause any damage by itself, if everything is fine inside the transmission…** The issues start to appear when you change the fluid if your clutches are already worn or damaged from use. If you go and replace the fluid after they are already worn out. this can cause slipping…

## Short answer:

First, there is really no such thing as a truly “sealed” transmission… What most people call sealed transmissions are simply **dipstickless transmissions** … Likewise, there is no such thing as “lifetime fluid”… There is only fluid that is expected to last for the anticipated service life of the transmission, which manufacturers generally consider to be around 150,000 miles… Many transmissions can and do last much longer than that…

## Really really really long detailed answer:

This was on a Toyota thread, but the basics works here also…

I have seen that website posted on here (and checked it out) recently in the same context, figured someone would flag it for spam, can’t find it now so my guess is it was removed…

Don’t know if I would quite call it spam as it could help someone out with info… I’m not going to flag it, but it wouldn’t surprise if one of the flag happy members did flag it…
