I would imagine that the electric heat was only used until the engine reached operating temperature and then a conventional heater core took over.
@Bing Ford did offer an electric windshield defroster for about $500 in the Taurus. It had no wires but had a conductive material embedded between the 2 layers. It worked instantly and was not all that reliable, and the initial cost resulted in few takers.
