Do people really change the car oil every 3k-5k miles?

The Toyota dealer may be telling you something different from what your Toyota owners manual says.

It depends on the car. Some European models, like BMW and Mercedes Benz, have large oil sumps and can accommodate longer oil change intervals. IIRC, the manufacturer recommends changes at 12,000 to 15,000 miles. For a vehicle with a large oil sump and oil that is has higher than normal additive content, a long oil change interval is not going to adversely affect the engine. This assumes it is not driven in severe conditions, of course. I change my oil when the car company recommends. This is between 7000 and 7500 miles for the older cars. I just got a new 2017 Accord, and it looks like the OLM will hit zero around 11,000 miles. Iā€™ll change betwee 20% to 15% life remaining, and that should be about 9000 miles. I do around 90% highway driving, so the car does not see severe conditions.
